BACKFLIP FIRST!!!!!!
learning bhs after backtuck: jump back, put hands down, done
learning backtuck after bhs: hell on earth fixing stupid habits

If you are scared to back tuck or spring, just look over your shoulder when you do it. Whichever feels more comfortable, look over your left or right shoulder at the spot a few feet behind your heels. try to still go straight back even if your head is turned and try to get your hands down there. Maybe this is a bad way to learn but thats how I did it. It should help you get over that initial fear

Definitely get a strong standing back flip first, Dovicka was right on the money with his post. Read the tutorial, then go get a spotter who knows how to critique you. Good luck!
ps. f'ing nice avatar, Dovicka!

I disagree with jooler, i know a lot of people that have messed up back tucks (back anythings actually) because they look over their shoulder

I meant just to learn the basic act of flipping backward, not to actually learn it this way. again, this is how I learned just to get used to flipping, my tucks are fine now.

I meant just for learning how to flip in general, not learn it this way. I did it like this when I learned just to see if I could get around. I didn't ever keep the head looking thing.

Backhandspring. For the exact reason you have said, getting backflip first means when you learn bhs, you just backflip and put hands down. There's no power in that, get a solid bhs first or else it will be harder to get a good one

getting bhs first = asking for bad habits

yeah i'd say learn back handsprings clean first to sort out the turning problem most people get.
Also, i know this is tricking but if you see a gymnastic class they teach tucks AFTER handsprings.

im making a tutorial soon, get a spotter or do it on a trampoline first, only fear will cause you to fall on your neck

yes they teach tucks after handsprings, but only because handsprings are easier to learn, and are less scary... HOWEVER, taking the time to learn back tucks first will not only take care of the turning problem, it will also cut out a lot of bad-habit-fixing AND undoubtedly make your back tuck higher than if you had learned the handspring first, getting rid of that stupid habit of jumping backwards...

i agree, learning the tuck first is better.
though bhs will help you understand the use of arms alot, giving you extra height on your bflips

hmmm.....well i see ya point but to be honest both moves have their advantages and downsides. whichever move you learn first ususally picks up a bad habit to pass onto the other move as at our place we see this happen all the time.
As for me i never noticed and problems with my height on tucks, i just used to miss my feet the first few times and land on my back.

i can backflip with no fear now but bhs just scare me to death, funny how that's possible
