just wonderin does any1 agree that we trick instead of doing gymnastics becuse they don't progress you fast enough in gymnastics. I mean compared to the way martial arts or tricking does. cuase i did gymnastics for a year and the most complex move i learnt was a cartwheel, but now i'm trickin i am doing b-twists and ariels. while my sister has done gymnastics for 2 years and can only do a round-off.

what do you guys think, is gymnastics to slow or tricks to fast.

I don't have a gym around, martial arts are much different than just tricks. I trick to do cool stuff, not to compete or fight etc.
I also hate gymnastics cuz you can't do corks or jacknives

yo wtf you learnt a cartwheel after 1 whole year of gymnastics classes ??

Gymnastics trains form and technique with a uniform strictness, and takes much longer.

Tricking is a personal thing and one learns at one's own pace... if you want to throw yourself out there and do a round-off fulltwist with your own special technique then you can. No one is going to stop you, or tell you to put a BHS before the flip, or make you drill round-offs until they're "perfect" ten times a day for a month.

Tricking is faster because we decide our own rate of trying tricks, and, being humans, we're impatient.

you serious? you needed a whole year in gymnastics to learn the cartwheel?

i think it depends on what you want to learn, maybe ask the teacher yourself to progress faster, i don't believe all you've learnt is a cartwheel after a year LOL. i take private tumbling classes and the teacher teaches whatever we want him to teach

The btwist was done gymnastics style, it was so ugly.

Im getting a bit fed up with my gymnastics class right now. It's full of cheer queers and i wish my teacher would push me harder.

I wanted to start trying standing araibians, and I wanted to just start on level ground. He basically made me start on a trampoline. And they all want me to do round off bhs backtuck's on some skinny platform.

I do gymnastics and I enjoy it. I also trick and I enjoy that too. The two arent incompatible as many here seem to think. As a matter of fact tricking has massively helped my gymnastics in terms of getting over fear and learning twisting and shit. Also gymnastics has helped my tricking in terms of cleaning up my own technique and getting more height on my tricks. No point being biased against something that dosn't hurt you in any way.

Source has a good point, But I still think at times my gymnastics coach wants me to do it his way, and not nessecarily the way the Would work best for me.

i did gymnastics for a year and the most complex move i learnt was a cartwheel,

all that really says is you must be very bad at cartwheels

i learned cartwheels in one free gymnastic lesson (you know, those lessons they give to get people into the sport), i was seven

i can't believe that in one year they only learned you how to cartwheel, you probably have the shittiest gymnastic class of all time, either that or you have like 1 lesson in an entire year

or he was just shit.

you cant blame everything on the class, itd be worse if he came on here saying "omg my gym taught me to dubbble bakk on my ferst class" and him only being able to do it into a pit with three spotters with the most god-awful form ever.

Cork is a gymnastics move

no, it isnt.

just because people "do it" in gymnastics on occasion doesnt make it a gymnastics move.

e.g people doing backflips on ice skates doesnt make it an ice skating move.

haha yeah our gym coach at rugby can wallflip and i doubt that's considered a gymnastics move.

No, it makes it a rugby move^^^^

People can do backflips on skates?

maybe bkick, but backflip?

The first post guy was kinda right. I like tricking because in like gymnastics or some MA I'm sure they basically limit your progression. In tricking you can go out and do whatever the heck YOU want. Which is what I think doing cool stuff is about.

Rook

Well, gymnastics doesn't "limit" your progression per se;

I think in this discussion "progression" is a relative term. In tricking, some would argue it's "learning new tricks" and expanding your repetoire - in gymnastics, the size of your "manoeuvre armory" becomes secondary to the skill with which your moves are performed.

Progression is different in gymnastics, basically.

I get what you're saying though, and like I said, tricking is very much a more personal thing than "gymnastics".

Skilzat85X

In tricking you can have your own form, unlike MA or gymnastics, but its still coz we dont like football
Would you mean "style" instead of form?

Skylark
Jun-07-06, 02:01 PM
no, we trick because we dont like football

So true.

But I think we trick because its free, gymnasts do things in a controlled environment and it limits them I think - tricking, you're not told how to do anything, you're not forced into doing things you don't want to do, you learn what you want when you want in the way you want and to me anyway thats so much more appealing than any gymnastics class.

Edit: And yeah people can backflip on skates, search on youtube - its off ramps and shit but yeah, its not uncommon. Watch the X Games.

I did it, just because I could.

bubka1121
Jun-07-06, 02:32 PM
first, yes people do backflips on ice skates

now thats out of the way, i did gymnastics for ten years before i even knew about the tricking community. i chose it because a) my sister was a gymnast and i would play around at the gym and i was good at it, b)it is a sport like no other when you combine the mental and physical toughness, along with the strength it requires and c) i have tried basketball, football(american and english), baseball and none of them challenged me the same way.
my coach was never one to limit me and i had and still have an excellent facility to train in. instead of limiting me, he would instead refine what i had learned.

I think that tricking is an amazing thing which i have hardly started tapping into and i know that it will help me progress even more in gymnastics as my gymnastics will help my tricking. The tricking community where i am (north texas) is pretty small so i just play around with it and try and learn stuff off of here but keep up with my gymnastics because i still compete in it.

to each their own, and thats all it comes down to
