View Full Version : I need some advice on front tucks.

I need some advice for my front tucks, i can land perfectly on a trampoline (and have done so since i was about 6-7 years old), now, since ive been trying them without a trampoline, i just land flat on my ass everytime, so i searched the site for tips, only thing that helped me was, instead of grabbing just below my knees when i tuck, grab my shins... I tried doing this today and the results were very effective, i could now literally overflip without even bouncing on the trampoline, just standing and flipping. So then i tried it running along the grass but still i land on my ass.. Only thing is now, i can feel my feet hit the ground first, but i still land on my ass / back...
I read Dogens tutorial on blocking but i still dont know how to apply it to my front tucks... Any tips for that? I cant work it out at all... I understand the physics and angles etc, i just CAN NOT do it...
Any help would be gladly appreciated.
Cheers

you've basically answered the question yourself. To acheive a good frontflip you NEED to block. Watch the tutorial a few more times and just practise blocking aswell as your frontflips. Remember on a front flip everything goes up, not forwards, so you need to use your arms in the take off. There is various ways to utilize your momentum from your arms, russian or japanese way or whatever. Just watch some videos of good front flips and note everything they do, then once you know exactly what to do its just a matter of drilling the move. Good luck with your front flip/

I was trying to stall as much as i could today, and i could stand on the spot on the trampoline and jump and flip without bouncing at all... And it seemed as if i could flip extremely slow and still make it the whole way over...
And aswel, about blocking, i dont understand still! Do you run then do the same movement as you would if you were to jump backwards suddenly, but just trust your body to go up instead of back?, or what, i just dont get how to do it properly... And can you do it with just a normal jump? By the way, its night time now and its raining, so hopefully its dry by tommorow = /.

to block you place your feet in front of you slightly, like how juji does on his double leg...but change it so you do it running fowards. If you really dont understand how to use it in a frontflip then practise with dive rolls first (hands hit the floor first remember), once u get the mechanics just block with a front flip

you need to know that frontflips on the trampoline are NOTHING like frontflips on grass, i can do standing frontwhips on a trampoline without using my arms, but i still land my frontflips crouched on the ground

The people above me covered the blocking aspect but how do you do your flipping?
If you wanna land you have to tuck really tight. When you flip dont be lazy, you gotta tighten into a ball, squeeze yourself. Use you rabs as well as leg muscles and arms. And one final thing when you tuck, dont bring your head down to your knees, bring your knees to your head and head ot knees so they meet up half-way and continue flipping. If you apply this advice correctly you're going to have a freaking fast spin.

I think i have the technique down, but i do NOT have a good vertical leap, so blocking is pretty much essential for a decent looking flip...
I was going to take some videos today but its raining =(, its stopped now but everything is still wet outside... Maybe it will clear up, then ill take some videos.
Thanks for the help.

EVERY time i jump up and stall before flipping, i always under rotate and land flat on my back.

Instead of throwing your hands forward and out try throwing them UP and jumping UP. its crucial. i used to frontflip exactly like that and now i land perfectly standing straight up. its only a matter of blocking. you might want to try it without so much run up. i think you may have a tad bit more momentum than you need. also, you dont need that huge hop before you go into the flip, it just saps a lot of the momentum that you could be using for the flip. heres a link to a vid of mine.

watch my hands, they go up which helped me alot with learning to jump up.
hope this helped a bit

?? y even watch the videos ppl give of front flips??.. the same advice applies to EVERY single person that says there having tropuble with front flips.. DONT GO FOWARD GO UP UP UPU PU PU UPU PUPUPUPUPUP... run then turn that momentum to go UP. a front flip dosnt consist of a run then a flip. it consist of run JUMP flip. make sure u jump and go up then flip

Ok, heres the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWo-KsilFJM
The first clip is where i stalled as much as i could, notice how slow i rotate?
I also threw in a sketchy ass dive roll too =p.
same problem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHSpJVpc1mM
ill improve and repost
i need to go UP! but i have a hard time tucking.

stop doing the hop before the flip. seriously just dont do it. its bad. jump as hard as you can. up. everything that there is to this move has already been said, you just have to do it.
oh and zero, try throwing your arms up rather than down.

the hop before the flip is a punch, so no, dont stop doing it. he specifically said his vertical isnt very good, so why would you tell him to jump instead of punch?

holy fucking hell, those were the best flip combo's i've ever seen! your frontflips are incredible!!! i wish my frontflips were that clean, i can only land them crouched, to matter how hard i try or how many techniques i try.
@nick b: no offence dude but you obviously don't know what you're talking about. you don't need a good vert for frontflips

there are loooads off diff ways to do a good fflip, but a few are alot easier than others.
for your style of fflip, i'd go with lemur and say get the arms up HIGH.
remember you're trying to flip around at head height, so try and lift yourself up that high.
a good tip is to look forwards just as you take off, that way you can make sure your arms are up high and you're going up.
tbh you dont need THAT much of a run into these moves, after all most of the momentum from the run will mean you'll jst be travelling forwards, unless you can block exceptionally well.

nick the way he is doing it is way more than a punch, its a leap. yes punches are important but not as exaggerated as he is doing it.

dude before you jump you're leaning forward a LOT. don't do that. it makes you jump forward instead of up. you have to jump up man, as others have said above :)

even in ur latest video you can look and see how you travel roughly 7 feet, there is no need to go that far, that distance should be converted into upward energy. also you look like you punch very flat footed, this will also not help. you should try punching from the balls of your feet. try some of this and let us know how it works

yeah, it's a horrible punch, but instead of getting rid of it, he should fix it.
when you punch (if you're still punching that is), you dont want to get high off the ground at all. super small punch. also, get your feet a little bit infront of you, that'll make you go up instead of flying forwards. punches shouldnt be more than a quick little hop thats only used for transfering your horizontal momentum into vertical momentum.
