I've got a month or so where I can be sore/half dead all day long and it won't matter. Is overtraining a few weeks good progress once you let your body rest ? (eg workout hard twice a day... ok maybe Antoine does it but I'm a fairly average guy)

Overtraining isn't good by definition.

Overtraining is good in the same aspect that overbidding is. (Not at all)

Alternate Muscle groups on different days and never target the same muscle groups two days in a row. If you warm up, cool down properly, and are nourished enough to help tissue repair, usually 48 hours is enough rest to avoid PAIN. Aches and soreness are good, that means your work out was successful. However if your muscles are painful to touch you need to wait, they are damaged.

Work out every day, but do different muscle groups.

overtraining is not good...hence the word...

You want to train to the maximum capability of what your body can handle each day. But of course being sore would decrease what that capability is. You need to learn to recognize what is hurting your body or helping it.

Yeah, thanks for the replies. I would have thought that after some time of complete abuse, the muscles would be like OMGWTF WE NEED TO GET STRONGER BEFORE DYING!!! but heh seems not :D.

Your analogy would be right, except that that is what your muscles do for normal training. Overtraining would be the equivalent of actually killing them before they have a chance to get stronger.

it wouldn't be called OVERtraining if it was good for u...

haha, reminds me of the question:

"is drinking TOO much water, bad for you..?"

Well, you could understand it in 2 ways. Bad for progress, or bad for your everyday life.

Overtraining can be good, but dont take my word for it.... http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/kelly16.htm..

Oh yeah and just as a last note as I quickly type in this message. Obviously the whole process of overtraining is a sensitive one so make sure you are aware and know what you are doing and shiat. bla bla bla whatever.

Overtraining can be as bad as overjelqing.

As everyone said, and I'll add something I said in another thread.

When you sleep, your muscles build. They don't build under any, any exercise at all, they get bigger, but not stronger. If you train too much and your body cannot use the night to build muscles, your body will use the next day and by the way, drain strength from your body, to build muscles. And that means you'll almost sit around motionless, which is not good at all.

So, no, overtraining is not good at all!
