View Full Version : First tornado kick attempt
Ok so this morning I went out a tried a tornado kick, and this is what it came out as - I know I need to work on it loads, like straightening my leg and stuff, but is that kind of.. roughly what it's supposed to look like? Or I am doing something majorly wrong? I just want to check in case I get into any bad habits..!

EDIT: new video below..
Hello, I would suggest to jump really hard and throw the arms up.
Your only problem seems to be the height, I had the same problem at first.
Also, I think it would be easier to travel sideways with the kick and not forward, it would kill a bit height but you get into the move easier.
It's all about the technique, so don't be disappointed if it's not working on the first tries, everyone experienced the same, the more you do them the better they get.

ohh a young girl....
i suggest you take some pics of yourself first, so we can analyze your technique by studying your physics, the less clothes you wear, the better you will become at tricking :good:

hell, im sick of all these pervs on tt. they give tricksters a bad name. anyway.
I suggest using a less spinny setup, you seem to be throwing yourself off balance. you need to jump up more and stop looking at the floor, tilt your head back and look at your target. do the whole thing with more 'oomph', focus on getting off the ground. good luck.
Well from the looks of it, the way they teach a tornado kick at my dojo is much easier than what you're trying to do. If you're going to kick with your right leg I suggest you start with your left leg about a foot behind your right. Pivot 180 degree's, lift your left leg up with your knee bent as you continue to come around, jump off your right leg and kick. I'm not sure if this is the correct form for what you're trying to do, but it might be an easier start.
i gotta say, for a first attempt, that was pretty decent =)
for starters, i'd say try changing your step through...that is, when you step over to launch into the kick, don't place your foot so close to the other. leave about two palms of distance bewteen your feet. this way it makes it easier to control your balance and also gives you a stronger punch off the ground. good luck (Y)
Ok thanks for all the non-pervy comments :P
I tried again and I was completely retarded, and then I randomly tried inside when I felt like it, and I think I might have improved a bit more with what you guys said:

EDIT: ok I was feeling a bit restricted in there, so:

You should really jump up as hard as you can, looks for me like you are doing them without any efford.
Try to concentrate a bit longer, imagine the move in your head and then pull it.
We have time and you should take yours too
nice!
but that one of the more wierd setups for the trondo kicks i eves saw!
lol
watch tkd's andy tut
http://www.kyukodo.com/Videos/Open%20hand/540%20help.wmv
that should really solve all your probs ^^
your setup has actually improved if you ask me.
It's just that there are multiple possible setups so its more a matter of personal preference.
In that last video you keep your leg stretched the whole time.
Watch Andy's and juji's tutorial(on the main site)
You will see they keep their kicking leg bent until they are at their highest points and then kick.
PS:I've never seen a girl do a tornado kick/540 so good luck =)

Yes, Daviddalo et al are responsible for the moral decay of society, and the destruction of the tricking universe....haha...You're only 16, come back in two years with that same opinion.
I uploaded an old Tornado Kick Exampler by Juji (http://youtube.com/watch?v=YWVL3YcWSIc). Compare that with yours.

i would suggest working on standing spinning rounds or inside crescents. all you're really doing in a tornado kick is spinning, then jumping from your kicking to non kicking leg, then doing a spinning roundhouse or inside crescent kick. so i think if u work on those kick standing you're tornado will feel alot smoother

Just becuase I'm 16 doesn't mean I don't have the right to an opinion.
Anyway, that last one looked a bit better, at least your head is up now - you could do to throw your arms up more and really JUMP off the floor, swing that kick through hard. You're kicking, remember - try and kill someone :dead:

I'd definitely try out both Juji's hop set up and TKD Andy's front stance set up. It works.
Bleh 16 year olds.........wait....I'm a 16 year old.
Ehm...I think ur setup is fucked. It got better, that's true, but it still looks weird when u turn around to kick. Just watch some 540, tornados in slow-mo (espessially the setup) and hopefully u'll get it. GL
EDIT: One more thing, kick that non-kicking leg harder when u turn then u'll get more air and another thing I noticed ur doing the kinda "hop"-setup, try to just step over instead of taking a hop nad turn. Hope that made sence...

forget completely about spinning 360 just throw the nonkicking leg up then the other...also it may be easier from no setup
congratulations on doing a front headspring

Yeah Practice your inside crescents. Then you'll be used to throwing a kick with some power behind it.
That's not to say either that the kick is all of the move. You bring up your nonkicker, chamber or not, and your momentum should bring the kick out hopefully. But the more effort and power you put behind the kick the faster it'll go, and it might feel more secure.
Wait until your first knee is facing the direction you were facing before you started the move, and then kick, and throw your arms up, nice and high...i hope that helps Good Luck!

Stop fucking spamming these threads you fucking dick heads.
Good first attempts. Make sure that you watch all the tutorials which people have linked for you and remember if you can to keep your arms below shoulder height. It helps with vertical rotation.
Good luck!

Really??? I need to get a digital camera...
Ali, I think you should ditch the setup all together. When I learned them I had no setup at all. I teach them to lower belts at my dojang by having them run through the kick on the ground, i.e. no jumping, so that they can get the feel of the turning. What you should do is stand in a fighting stance with your left foot forward. Turn toward your back and look forward over your right shoulder. This will twist your body pretty good. Then lift your right foot (keep your knee bent) and spin around so that you are almost facing front. From there it is just a flying roundhouse, i.e jump and kick with your left leg as you land on your right leg, you know, like the karate kid "crane kick" only your hip is turned over into a roundhouse. Practice that untill you have a feel for the spin, then just jump and do it all in the air. Easy:)
