View Full Version : Chalk in the gym.

Saw Juji and Antoine among the clouds of chalk in '8' and was wondering if this is common in gyms where all of you live. Never come across with it here in Sweden.
Or did they bring it themselves perhaps?

If it is for a fact commonplace everywhere else then I will find a corner and sulk.. Or just force the gym proprietor to get some.

"Budo-Fitness" or "Stadium" might have some. And no, I've never run across chalk in a swedish gym.

I take my own, one of my gyms has provided it if you ask, though. Its a hardcore gym though. I've never been hassled about using it, but I am discreet about it.

THERE IS NO CHALK ALLOWED AT MY GYM!

AND YOU CANNOT BOUNCE THE BARBELL OFF THE FLOOR WHILE CLEAN AND JERKING, BECAUSE IT UPSETS THE LAMPS DOWNSTAIRS. NEITHER CAN YOU LET GO OF THE BARBELL WHILE DEADLIFTING, SNATCHING OR ANY OTHER KINDS OF MOVEMENTS.

"WHY THE FUCK DO THEY HAVE A DEADLIFTING PLATFORM THEN, CONSIDERING YOU DON'T WANT TO PUT DOWN 220LBS SMOOTHLY FROM ABOVE YOUR HEAD TO THE FLOOR", YOU MIGHT ASK!

WELL, MY GYM IS A MCDOJO FOR WEIGHTLIFTING! A MCGYM!

I LOVE IT! THE TECHNO, THE TRANCE, THE POP-MUSIC, THE UGLY FAT WOMEN ON THE STAIRMASTERS, GOOD ADVICE LIKE "CARBO FUEL IS THE CLEANEST CARB AROUND" FROM THE PT'S ETC... I LOVE IT!

no chalk where I go. I just have to rely on my own grip or gloves if i decide to wear them.

my university's "varsity" gym didn't allow chalk so I GTFO and I plan to bring my own to the next gym I frequent and shove it up their asses if they don't like it.

I hate the fact that ALL, ALL fucking gyms play the same shitty pop/techno shit over and over.

At my former gym I hassled them to play some metal and they played 2 songs. TWO songs, and they lowered the volume because it was "disturbing" to some people in the gym.

OH GOD

I don't give a shit about chalk. Gloves work just fine. Actually today when I went I forgot mine but it wasn't that bad. My gym is awesome, and at most, a mile from my house.

I don't give a shit about gloves or chalk. I have a thick callous around my palms which I pick off and throw at people.

it all depends on how good the bars are at your gym. If theres more than one, find out which has the best grip. Some are completely smooth and even chalk wont help, some will have awesome grip and youll only need chalk if you're sweating.

Swartz, please don't use gloves :/ its really gay. Its not the same as chalk, which just normalises a wet/slippy bar. Plus, you'll look like a faggot wearing them in the gym tbh. What do you deadlift?

DeeJay
Jan-03-07, 02:01 AM
Do you guys chalk up when you hang weights from your dick?

You're an idiot, though I've stated that numerous times already but once again this post adds to that point. Gloves aren't gay, they add grip, a more comfortable grip for that matter, and considering there's no chalk at this gym and many others, it's not gay when it's the only option besides bare hands.

What the fuck is with the deadlift question? I've told you before I don't know my maxes because I don't lift for that purpose at the moment. I honestly don't know what it is and even when I find out I could care less about telling you. I'm starting to appreciate posts from JKT, White Knight, Towels and wakka more than yours. Just fuck off. Jesus Christ.

I've improvised though. If you wrap a sheet of paper around the barbell, you get almost as good of a grip as with chalk.

Lobo
Jan-03-07, 06:37 AM
Swartz is right, obviously. Since I've started wearing gloves my callouses have decreased considerably - which is a good thing. You're not "hardcore" merely because you use chalk.

I don't use either and my maxes are probably higher than yours, rock_ten, haha.

To go on with the digression in this thread, my main gym plays classic rock like the beatles. They used to play some metal-like music but it was "offensive". I can't get pumped when I hear that all I need is love.

Bring it yourself, now I tend to use blocks, and just rub them against my calloused palms.

Yeah its kinda distracting until you realise you have 240lbs+ on your back and the barbell is starting to hurt.

Nothing wrong with AC/DC but I want my death metal as well! At the Gates is rage!

I didn't say anything about your max. I know that you've already told me that you haven't maxed. But you do deadlift, and you probably know how much weight is on the bar when you do it. That you got so upset about it when I asked the first time, it that other thread, is a shame. We're just talking about training and shit, and its interesting to hear what other members are doing.

I'll suck up to Swartz here and say that no it is not interesting. For me at least it is not particularly interesting what other guys on a forum deadlift. It's not to interesting to know what my friends deadlift either because I don't compare myself with them.

But we're all different.

that's strange imo. Personally, I want to improve etc, to reduce the number of people in the world who are physically superior to me (as well as increasing my control of the physical universe). I want to be more powerful than them. I directly compare myself to everyone else with the aim of bettering them. Rarely individual people; usually an average etc.

In this case, I want to know about training details and abilities of forum members who pwn me in this arena, like all the big-avatar members, too. People that I see and think are ownage. Swartz had a sudden attack of moddest-faggotry when I first asked him, in the other thread.

I also want to know about how other people train/"live" in respect to these kind of goals. Thats what this forums is about, surely. We tell each other how we each do things - and what it did for us, so that we can use those ideas in our lives.

Does your disinterest in what other people do extend that far, or do you simply not want to know the level of acheivment other people are at? By your participation in this forum I'd guess that you're interested in how other people do things. Knowing how "well" those things "worked", is an essential part of it.

Actually that Nelly Furtado song Maneater gets me pumped to lift now. For some reason, it was playing every time I was maxing out and now I associate it with lifting.

But rock_ten, you can deadlift 700 pounds. You shouldn't be worrying about what other people do.

Chalk only helps against your own sweat, that's it.
Gloves help against your own sweat.

If you really think that gloves help you on more than this, you are the faggot.

I still don't understand that bullcrap. You think most regulars or "popular" members here, those with or without big avatars must be really into training and physically superior to you, or "ownage" as you put it. You made this assumption about me without any prior knowledge on my physical abilities.

Well sure, maybe some are superior to you in this group of yours but for the most part that's simply fucked up logic in the form of shit falling out of your ass.

It makes no sense whatsoever. Popular people on this forum are that way because they've been active for a long time. It has nothing to do with their physical abilities and for some reason you keep wanting to put the two together. There's no connection, get off it.

I've been pretty humble about my abilities for a long time, so there's no reason for me become super-modest all of the sudden, and I haven't like you accuse me. You're simply annoying, and that's why I've grown tired of you. So as I've said before and I'll say it again...shut up.

Gloves help against your own sweat.

If you really think that gloves help you on more than this, you are the faggot.

the leather or synthetic palm-surface of the gloves is different to the skin on your hands, and will therefore provide different grip characteristics against the bar.

Also, gloves dramatically reduce your hands' sensitivity to the bar, which IMO is quite important in lifting.

when I said "pwn me in this arena" I didn't mean in weightlifting etc. I mean here on TT, where you guys are the dominant rapists, and I'm just a fag.

explained above - I don't think this. Infact you have told me several times, and I have acknowledged, that you don't consider your strength etc to be very high.

Everything I've said/asked in this line of conversation, started in the other thread, has been pretty reasonable, dude. Most other people would have just replied with something like "oh I know i'm still shit, but I currently deadlift X reps of Y, I do [this] in my training, I've improved from Z since I started"

It seems that you just totally misinterpretted and misunderstood what I was saying, right from the beginning, and continue to do so in every post. Theres probably no way around that, its just a mis-match of how I write, and how you interpret. We're not on the same 'wavelength', if you will.

If you cant lift something safely without the use of aids such as straps/belts/gloves/chalk they you shouldnt be fucking lifting it.

If you really want to be a fanny with weak forearms, core, stabilising muscles and the such.... carry on with your training aids.

If you want to be a real man, swallow some pride and lift raw.

Not that I generally use aids, but I do deadlifts to work my hams, quads, and glutes, not my forearms.
