View Full Version : New RULE for samplers.
That's right, Im putting my foot down on this. This has to become an almighty rule from now on.
No more Japanese music in samplers.
And it's not that I dont really like jpop/jrock, it's just that.. it's in waaaayy too many samplers. Go out and find other music. Give people some variety. I think it's safe to say that the majority here doesnt speak japanese, so eventually all those songs end up sounding the same, not that they dont already.
Go and find a good rock song, and I challenge people to go find a good hip hop track, there is definately a shortage of hiphop samplers. Give me some METAL, dammit. Throw in some techno even. Get creative! I miss the days where with each new sampler comes a band I go and check out and eventually buy their CD. So...
No more Japanese music in samplers.
..at least for the next 2-4 years.

Agreed.
The only exception should be if they're filmed in Japan or if a Japanese person has made them.
Cause seriously, nobody wants a bunch of pasty white Japophiles running around.

i agree, people are starting to think they can make anything look good in a vid by using jpop/rock as the sound track.
get some ORIGINAL music. I try to anyway... ive probably used music thats been in other peoples vids, however my claim to fame is that steve miller used the same song i used in one of my vids, just after i made mine. However i never released mine as it was only a day sampler haha.
but yeah, original music F_T_W_!

Reim, I have an extremely shitty sampler up on Club540 under my user name "YuenRob". It's extremely shit and mostly a joke. But it does have a great old
"In Flames" song called "Dialogue With The Stars".
Maybe i'll make a good sampler in a few months and throw on some BATHORY. Go VIKING METAL!!!

How is using J-rock not original. I mean.....surely I agree, if someone is using some pussy Naruto music over and over. Then yeah, I get the point. But it is very rare that I hear J-rock used in samplers besides maybe the same 1 or 2 bands used over and over again.
We have all heard Asian Kung Fu gen before. But.......there is alot of Jrock out there for the world to taste.
As you will soon find out by the samplers I release in the future. :wicked:
But.......btw. The same could go for ANY gendre of music out there so far. It always same shit being used over and over in all samplers, whether it is J-rock, Metal, Rock, rap, whatever.
I think Mr.Reim, that people just need to explore with more bands and get creative with their music. Doesn't matter of what sort it is. :ogre:

How bout Jazz in a sampler...everyone loves jazz!! (Cowboy bebop's Tank comes to mind) heh...
Id love to hear some jazz in samplers! But not Cowboy Bebop stuff, Ive listenned to that soundtrack on repeat waay too many times. But hey, samplers arent made for me.
No disrespect to anyone that has/does make samplers with jpop/jrock. I have myself, even. Ive loved alot of the songs that have come out of those samplers, and loved alot of those samplers. It's just... it's all becoming a big blur. Yea, I think everyone should use whatever music they want, Im just hoping that with that comes more variety.
Like.. whenever I hear a sampler with overused (ie: Matrix music, Yellowcard, etc) music its an instant turn off. Songs that I hear on the radio are also I big turn off. I think it was cool that there was a time where each new sampler would come a new song, and I and others havent heard of, but then go download it.
Those songs are frequently the songs on tricking mixes at my gym.. and you know what.. we've been listenning to the same stuff for the past half year, because nothing new and exciting has come out, in the field of music in regards to samplers.
I think Mr.Reim, that people just need to explore with more bands and get creative with their music. Doesn't matter of what sort it is. :ogre:
PS. I am going to murder you. :wicked:
I agree! But.. there's just been alot of Japanese stuff recently. It's basically one focused point that Im trying to make on a broad topic. I dont care if you use japanese music, but I also dont want to hear the same thing over and over, and like I said.. the jrock is just all blending toghether. And honestly right now, I cant tell one Gackt song from the next.
Or that L'arc en ciel or something. Everywhere I look, there's some kinda jap thing. Jap music, anime, jap-wannabes, jap drawings, even more jap music, jap myspace, jap websites, jap forum members etc...
It's just too much. And listening to some dude sing japanese falsetto while dressing up in a red, TIGHT leather outfit is just not my thing... the closest I get to that, is listening to Motley Crüe.
Plus, the jap-fad has been around for like... 1.5 years. It's getting repetitive.

people should use music that fits in their opinion, don't use music only because other people like it. use the music you like.
but i agree people shouldn't use music that is overused, such as that song 'open your eyes' by guano apes, or breathing or way away by yellowcard, it just gets annoying

Everyone should be banned from using Fall Out Boy too, nice band, i really like them, but they're getting rather caned to fucking death
I think samplers with hip hop music and shiz could work, just needs to be done right, Sesshoumaru did it right thats for sure, so i'm sure others could. It'd probably be foreign hip hop mostly though, french rap owns, and a sampler would look sucky if it had 50cent playing in the background.
DRUM N BASS FTW

Ahh ok. I haven't been around the forums enough lately to notice. If there was an overflooding of Jrock then. This is to be an issue! JROCK must be for only bad ass samplers! :good: :ogre:
Or that L'arc en ciel or something. Everywhere I look, there's some kinda jap thing. Jap music, anime, jap-wannabes, jap drawings, even more jap music, jap myspace, jap websites, jap forum members etc...

Same thing goes as I said above. I could just be missing it since I haven't been online much lately. But..........fucking J-rock is awesome. Its the same as any other music. If you play same songs over and over or even same artists. Of course it will grow to be bland. XD
The problem is that to most people who don't understand japanese, it will all seem exactly the same (bland). It's not as if japs have the widest array of voices around, and I don't know of one single japanese guitarist who doesn't play neoclassical or really basic shredding (Syu i.e., is really simple, haha.). It's basically just "bright jap" and .... "brighter jap" really, haha. In metal, you get everything from deep growling to falsetto singing by the singer of Vision Divine. In rap, you get everything from 50 cent to that annoying dude in 19 blocks. Japanese people just don't seem to have that kind of a variety. They all sound like kids:P
Jan you do realize that lyrics comes in like third or fourth in music? The most important aspect of music is melody (to most people at least) and when it comes to jpop this is the key to the genre :P Lyrics? Who gives a crap, the melodies, compositions, voices, arrangements.. It all means so much more than lyrics. Hip hop and such lives mostly by the lyrics seeing as it's not a very 'musical' genre..
I rather have music in the background of a sampler than lyrics.
... I'm a guitarist, and I have yet to hear anything remotely impressive or "highly melodic" in j-pop/rock. My favourite guitarist (Marty Friedman) plays with Puffy Ami Yumi, and even his stuff got boring, because her way-too-happy melodies and high pitch typical jap-voice ruined it.
And the voices I've heard mostly consist of high-pitch jap-singing with way too much vibrato and wide vowels "yaaaahhhrrrrrrdeeekuuuhhhhhhhhhllllll" etc.
Show me something impressive. Please.

HOW DARE YOU ALL!!? The great and powerful Reim and Jan shall lead you from the land of ignorance. Just because lyrics come 3rd or 4th.... and not always....and you're an idiot.... doesn't mean they aren't important. We'd all be happy with some Rammstein shit. The melodic aspect behind music is important yes... but asian music is different and has a completely different feel behind it... IT'S A DIFFERENT CULTURE!!!! I'd think more important would be the beat and the mood the song sets over-all. Combining beat, melody, and lyrics. And J-rock/pop is just... I feel like I'm watching an asian commercial for cell phones or shampoo.
<3 mad capsules http://youtube.com/watch?v=cKP7GoZZddI
Jan, there's nothing impressive about shredding away in blazing speed alá Yngwie Malmsteen either (unless you do dual harmonies like Herman Li and Sam Totman in DragonForce <3). If you mean to say that jpop do not possess melodies I'm afraid you're musically impaired my friend seeing as the genre bases itself on catchy and upbeat patterns and harmonies.
To each his own sure but seriously, don't speak of what you don't know.
I listen to jpop and power metal because that's where the great melodies and clean vocals are :D
Jan i need to know when your going home.

Thanks for the input. Here's my comment:
Sex Machineguns (Sex Pistols wannabe, eh?) :
Overall bland. The guitars are fast, but nothing really stands out. Also: the voice is typical jap (like Iron Maiden = typical metal, typical jap = the same in jap music). So: Annoying voice, and nothing really stood out. Didn't like it much.
Dir en grey:
Half-decent attempt at making a heavy song, and it has a couple of mildly interesting elements. I hope Gackt was the singer, because (to me, anyways) it sounded exactly like him. It means nothing though, as the point of the song is missed 100%, considering I can't understand jack shite of what he's talking about. *Gore gore, heart tear, wooo, jap*
D'espairs Ray:
They're japanese! They're emo! They're Japemo!
Again: I hope the singer was Gackt, because this sounds exactly like him as well (I don't know who the singer is). The voice is typical japanese:
*Huauauhhhh*ish singing, lots of vibrato, and of course: The "ohhh" ending in words. Hahaha, japanese rhyming is funny. "... ohhh" "... uhhh" "... ehhhh".
Moi Dix Mois:
Scaryish intro. I like that. This song could've been pretty decent, but the voice is PISSING me off. It's the epitome of gurgly throat-singing with the all-too-normal *ouauauahhhhh* sounds.
Malice Mizer:
Wayyyyyyyyyy too emo. His voice sounds different from normal japs so far... It goes right back to standard-jap when he starts singing japanese though. His voice is a liiiittle bit darker, but that's about it. All in all: It's just too emo. It's been a long time since I saw a music vid this emo:P
Hironobu Kageyama:
Heyyy, this song is funny at first. It sounds like the typical theme song for some kind of '80s cartoon. ... HEY, I've heard this before. This is the theme song of some kind of anime I've seen. ... RIGHT, DBZ. Hahaha. This is the best I've heard so far tbh, but hahaha; the japanese need to learn how to end words without vowels. Lyrical rhyming gets insanely repetitive, and it gets funny after a while, hearing all "AHHHH... EHHHH....OHHHHHH" etc...:P
I somewhat liked X-Japan though. Every single singer has annoyed me so far though, hahaha. The music itself is decent in some cases, but man... If they got rid of that japanese-sounding vowel-singing with vibrato and *uohhh*, it'd be so much better.
Thanks for the song recommendations though. I can now base my opinion on something much more "proven" (in my case).

you didn't specify that in the main post, and editing it would be something a Puerto Rican would do.
For all you people who said that lyrics come last in music- this is true in popular music- for example, "Shut Up" by Black Eyed Peas. I was doing karaoke to that song the other night...it's retarded as hell. The chorus- Shut up just shut up shut up x9 or so. It's magical. I think that not looking at the lyrics mainly just shows a lack of musical taste. Some lyrics are corny as hell, while the music is awesome, for example, Dream Evil- The Book of Heavy Metal. Amazingly good music, amazingly bad lyrics. I still listen to it, though, because despite the bad lyrics that musical talent is INCREDIBLE. Now take a look at JPop JRock Japmo or whatever J_ you want. The lyrics are...in Japanese, so I don't understand them, but THEY ARE NOT REDEEMED BY GOOD MUSIC....because the music sucks Jan's balls. Rammstein's lyrics I can't understand without the translation, but they have great, catchy songs. About hermaphrodites and gay sex and such.
That was Scott McDonald...oh, and just to start Jan's part of this, I saw Dragonforce in concert- they screwed up constantly. To call the playing of Sam and Herman "harmonic" would be a bit of an exaggeration- they not only forgot which notes to play, they were not playing in sync and just generally sucked. It was like an hour and a half of loud buzzing noise.
OVER TO YOU, JAN!
Herman Li and Yngwie Malmsteen aren't good musical guitarists. Yngwie plays the same diminished arpeggios and the same neoclassical scaling bullshit over and over again. I have yet to hear him play the same solo twice (as he never actually composes, he just improvises.. badly. He can't replicate his solos). Herman Li can't play at all. His studio stuff is "spot on", but that's because he plays about 1000 layers of the same shite, and retries every time he screws up. Listen to his live stuff: He falls on stage. He screws up the arpeggios. He forgets which notes he was supposed to play for Revolution Deathsquad when playing at the Wiltern in L.A. He just can't play. He even got bashed for sucking at mIRC a few years back, at the channel #metal on undernet. Also, don't forget his attempt at an "A MAJOR 7 ACTUALLY" in the "Betcha can't play this" clip from some metal magazine (it's on youtube).
Good guitarist:
Marty Friedman (can't get more melodic than this guy).
Jani Liimatainen from Sonata Arctica. (He hardly plays a single mistake, and he's half the age of Yngwie.)
Jason Becker (Though paralyzed, he still composes with his eyes and a computer program. He could play Paganini's 24th Caprice at age 16 or something).
Chris Broderick from Nevermore and Jag Panzer (He plays classical, jazz, slap guitar, metal, rock and basically everything.)
MEEEEEE (HEY, me and Scott are rock stars, we own... the world... and it's entire population... including you... Xxxx). (I'm not really good, haha)
So yeah, Steve Vai and all those people are boring. Listen to good guitarists who don't just shred their asses off and miss everything. Listen to guitarists who can actually make music as well! ... name a single jpop guitarist who actually composes good solo-albums!
Hugzzzz and kisses

the funny thing is reim was just in a sampler with japanese music. the latest Dogen one. i didnt like the song. it had boring beat and unpleasant raspy voice.
the rant: i hate when singers go all raspy. like a lot of em do. the only band that has even remotely been able to pull that off is the Hives. and i dont even listen to them.
i say whoever plays an instument should try writing the music to their own samps. that would be pretty cool.

I'm singing acapella in my next samp. Oh wait no, Reim made a rap song that I absolutely MUST use.

I like japanese music, yo.
It's not about liking a kind of music or not! It's not about Japanese music!
