What's a shin split?

What's a shin split? I'm kind of unsure what it is, what causes it. What does it feel like, why is it such a big deal?

feels like a burning pain in your shins, it's fucking annoying
be careful with landing moves (especially fflips and aerials), you don't want shin splints

I remember getting shin splints while marching in the army.
Many many new recruits got it on the first two weeks and basically all we had to do was suck it up and keep going. Which is NOT advisable, rest until healed and free from pain.
