View Full Version : Age limits
I'm 17 years old. Will I be able to stretch my body well enough or am I already too old? Does age influence the ability to stretch?

I heard that once you hit like 20+ your spine wont beable to flex as much(like do the bridge) Is that true?

Age only affects rate at which flexibility can be gained, the older you get the more time it may take, but your age should have little or no impact on the extent of how much flexibility you can gain.
I'm not saying everybody is capable of kissing their own arse, but unless you want to become a contortionist you should be fine.
Thanks. Now I'll know that it is worth stretching.

Actually, from talking to various instructors and reading up what I can, I've found it's actually kind of a reverse situation. You benefit less from stretching at a younger age because the majority of the connective tissue is not finished developing, so stretching can (in some cases, not all) cause scar tissue that prevents it from growing properly. But when the body is more or less done growing the connective tissue can start to be trained via stretching and exercising.

Completely false in all aspects, as the bridge I know personally and have friends older who do it the same as whent hey started.
Old men do the splits no problem. Look.. aged 50 and teaching us n00bs the how to maintain it.

Thats Thomas Kurz who could do Oversplits with 20. Not the best example...
And yeah if you are older it takes a longer time to develop flexibility. I am 24 and i stretch every day for 1 hour since 2 months now. And i think it will take 2 months more to get the splits.

No i dont have a desk job. But its very easy to get the splits when you are young and in puberty or before puberty.
And everybody is different. But i have 2 friends who started to stretch at the same time i did. And their progression is the same as mine.
I do a stretching routine that is very similar to flex mutants program.
And i do isometrics every second day.

So you stretch for 6-7 hours.
How often do you do this in one week ? And i suppose you only do static and dynamic stretching then ?
Maybe i will give it a try in my semester break. But its ok for when i get them in 2 months. I just cant believe that i could get them so fast.
How the hell can you stretch for 6 hours without getting bored?
I've got absolutely no doubt you could easily gain the splits in a week doing that, but your joints would be sore as hell the next week wouldn't they?

People of all ages and physical conditions benefit from exercise, both strength, endurance and flexibility. Of course, the older or more out of shape or sicker you are, the less you should start off with, and your maximum development is more limited, but 17 isn't really an age where that'd be a big factor.
Although I still think you need that weird genetic condition or to start off at single digits to get that weird hypermobility supersplits contortion power like Rubber Ritchie has. That, or a crazy-nutritious vegan diet.
