go see a sports therapyst. They will advise you to rest for a couple weeks and will also give you sports massages to make sure they heal up properly.
im hoping to try all other ways of fixing them before spending any money cos im broke
ive also heard acupuncture works wonders
True?

hrm...RICE? haha..just make sure you rest and massage them. if you would like, you can take some ibuprofen to keep inflammation down and pain away. 800mg is the magic number :P. 3 times a day (once every 8 hours with food) as needed for pain baby! senzu beans are the shit.

Yeah dude, if you don't rest them they are going to get much worse before they get any better. And that's just going to mess up your form when you're trying to do stuff (tricks, running, whatever).

Are these due to the microfractures in the shin bone or more of a muscle thing? I can never tell when I get em, just that they hurt.
One 'cure' (or prevention) I remember reading somewhere is strengthening the dorsiflexion muscles. I'm not sure why though. Anyway, I want to get one of those things you hang upside down in. Not only with that work your dorsiflexion muscles, but wouldn't that decompress that area a lot to help give it a rest?
I actually went to a couple forums where people sprint on pavement to cause microfractures in their bones, then drink a lot of bones and either hang upside down like that or hang their legs off a bed with weights tied to them and go to sleep, something about trying to duplicate that surgery some height-challenged people get where the surgeon splits the bone and fixed it a quarter-inch apart and lets it heal or something, cept a lot more gradual. Even if that didn't work, you have to admire their ingenuity and dedication.
i always thought shin splints were myofascial inflammation.
rest, ice,( perhaps take anti-inflammation-drugs,) stretch, stenghten, propriozeption

I usually get them during the summer when I do athletics on a hard track.
I hear Dogen's Titanium Ankles would probably help to strengthen the muscle by the shin but I've never put it to use from general laziness...

I had a nasty case of shin splints when I started distance running a couple of years ago. As much as I tried to train through them, it just made things worse.
I eventually broke down and took 3 weeks off from high impact activities and that finally did the trick. While I know it sucks to have to alter your training regimen so drastically, I'm afraid it is the only sure fire way to get completely over them. Its not gonna do you any good to continue to half ass train through the pain. Rest, get over them and then you can up your training intensity to 100% again ftw!
P.S. that was 2 years ago and I haven't had any trouble from shin splints since.

If you don't have a dorsiflexion machine, look for a decline situp bench. The kind you hook your feet under. When it is high enough that the friction of you against the bench isn't enough to keep you from sliding down, then your feet dorsiflexion is what keeps you hooked there. It's a good static hold, and then you just do ab work with medicine balls or whatever.
I've always wondered if swimming can still be done on a fairly good level even though you have shin splints. I never had the chance to try when I got them in the army. Although complete rest is still the best idea to enable the body to focus heal the shins.

Often you'll find that after you've rested and fully recovered from shin splints you won't get them again.
This isn't always the case for everyone, for example, I only really do training on a hard track in the summer during athletics which causes my shin splints to come back every summer.
But let them rest and recover and I suspect that they will not cause you a problem again.

I swim with shin splints. I've never had much trouble. The fins (if you wear them) make me a little sore after a while but it's nothing I can't just grin and bare.

didn't dogen say something about them in his titanium ankles vid he made? I think he said something like your calf muscles are a lot stronger than muscles around your shin making in unbalanced. I used to have them bad but then I started to do shin exercises and they have been improving greatly
hey man, check out the website in my signature, then go to video tutorials, and download the titanium ankles video. it has some good tips for helping with shin splints.
Hey Dogen! I'm banned from your forum, what gives?

A physio told me what Mastersword said. The thing about doing exercises when already suffering shin splints is that the next day you'll hardly be able to walk, it's similar to doing backflips with torn abs.
Best thing to do for the meantime is do lots of conditioning avoiding the legs for 2-3 weeks, then do the stuff in Dogens Tutorial. otherwise you might screw them up more.
Also another thing that REALLY strengthens your stabiliser muscles in your ankle and your shins and your quads is rollerblading. I had 2 sprained ankles last year and wish I did Dogens tutorial as they're weak as peas, but I can only go for 5 mins on blades without tiring and needing a break. That time will increase as my ankles build.

When mine hurt during a session or whenever I just do this stretch

It feels really really good on your shins

Why does that muscle get so tight anyway? Is it that besides pulling the front of the foot up, it also pushes the heel down (like how people dorsiflex during leg presses, pushing only with the heels thinking they will strengthen it) and acts as a shock absorber? I think you can still get them if you always land on the balls though so probably not.
