If you just want to learn the basic movements and skills while getting time to screw around on plyo, there's absolutely no sense in joining a competitive team. Most gyms allow you to take private or recreational lessons or have an open gym time in which you can practice on your own under minimal supervision. This is what you want.

The horror stories people tell of waiting years to learn a basic skill are often exaggerated, but the grain of truth is indeed that a competitive program will emphasize general conditioning before skill progression while you are new to the sport and, since gymnastics is heavily dependent on form and execution, it makes sense that you will need to have absolutely perfect basics before you can move on to perfecting the more advanced skills. There are a great deal of basic things that your average tricker doesn't even think twice about, but gymnasts have spent years on -- handstands, presses, rolls, limbers, cartwheels, round-offs, etc.

In Scotland, expecting open gym, me, Jan, and Team TF were greeted by a beginner's gymnastics class. Zogm forward rolls! Deadly stuff.

Is that really true about ALL gymnastics class? I was thinking about joining one temporarily to learn the basics (backflip, front/back handspring, etc.) .

Tell them what you want. You're not planning on going pro, you just want to learn some cool looking tricks.

Tell them you want to learn how to backflip, they will help you.

No, you can probably find some that will just go straight to the basics. Just ask and find out.

It's usually hard to find classes that will accept older teens though, so don't be surprised if you have to end up negotiating private lessons or something. Most places spend their beginner level group class time teaching only young kids because they hope that the little ones will stick to it and then move through the levels into their competitive program in order to bring their gym honor and glory. That you are a guy is also working against you because men's gymnastics is relatively unpopular, whereas just about every little girl ends up in gymnastics (or ballet) at some point in her childhood.

It's worth it taboo. Trust me.

All the basic stuff trains your body so that it adapts tricksing. Plus you can work out there for basic and practice tricksing on your spare time.
