I've read that most bodybuilders shy away from fully devloping their obliques so that their waist appears smaller, but I'm interested in this neglected muscle group. So what are the best exercises for oblique development? I'm aiming for development like Sandow's:

What a big leaf. Sandow obviously packed some major heat.

Saxon side bends.

I think the idea of avoiding developing a muscle for aesthetics is silly. I can understand not caring about building it and focusing on ones you like more, but to go "oh, I need an alternative exercise because this one will build too much obliques" is all ughhh.

Woodchoppers
Full contact twists
Windscreen wipers
Side bends
Suitcase deadlifts

normal deadlifts and stuff should still do the job pretty well though.

Let's not forget this big one for old time strongmen:

normal deadlifts and stuff should still do the job pretty well though.Because deadlifts are all the ab work you will ever need. Calves too. Also triceps, and pecs. In fact, the deadlift, or the squat, works every muscle in the body maximally no matter what so you never need to do anything else, ever.

I read somewhere (I believe it was t-nation) that obliques don't have a whole lot of strength and size potential.

Anyway you should definitely give the bent press a go.

Sandow's obliques look like muscular love handles

carrying heavy shit seems to be owning to my obliques etc. Walking with a sandbag, log, rock, or whatever. Either bear-hugging it or holding it overhead, whatever.

I don't seem to witness my obliques working much when I do things. I do saxon side bends, and all the compound lifts that people claim work abs, and the ab machine, which is pretty useless by now.

I use the abtronic electronic pulse machine. It sends electricity through your abs making them defined, burning stomach fat at the same time.
It's incredible, I can sit and watch tv at the same time. It's better than squats, DL or any other workouts I've ever tried.

Why break a sweat when a machine can do all you work?

From all the taekwondo I've done I've got really developed oblique's, so I'm trying to do the opposite of you and build the rest!

I don't know alot about weight training (yet), but I do know for sure that holding roundhouse and sidekicks up high really works them out, and I think that's why mine are like they are.

My problem is that the rest isn't as developed, so it just doesn't look right.

Can someone explain some of these exercises?

Try google (http://google.com). I typed in bent press and I got a ton of results.

Also taekwondo would work your obliques like mad because of all the rotations (spinning kicks) and the holds.

Tricking works out your obliques a lot. When I started seriously tricking, my waist tripled in size, haha.

My waist has been the same size ever since I was born.
