Video games from us.
Now what I want to happen is for people to just start submitting in games. Detailed in the format I have used. I'll add them to the front page.
With this guide I try and focus on more obscure games. So don't be shocked if Zelda isn't on the list.
10. Sunset Riders
http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Sunset_Riders_GEN_ScreenShot1.jpg
By Konami. for Snes (and sega but screw that)
If you put in your cartridge and the familiar konami sign came up, you just knew you were in for a treat. The feelings no different with this faithful arcade port.
http://www.klov.com/images/S/cSunset_Riders.jpgIf you notice by looking at the original arcade game you'll see it actually had capabilities for 4 PLAYERS!!
http://www.s-b.com.ar/Sunset_Riders-2.gif
The games art style is very bright, and always interesting. It's incredibly faithful to the arcade game as you can notice by looking at the screenshot below.
http://images.webmagic.com/klov.com/screens/S/ySunset_Riders.png(From arcade)
The level design is always kicking out new and exciting things for you to do.
Reasons to love it:
Bright exciting graphics
Multiplayer rocks.
Interesting characters (Each have slightly different shots)
Dodge button (This adds soo much to the already intense gameplay. You can slide underbullets with this
What it's known for
The bull running scene.
9. Crash n' the Boys street challenge
http://www.theoldcomputer.com/Libarary%27s/Pictures/NESGameCovers/C/Crash%20%27n%20the%20%20Boys%20Street%20Challenge. jpg
It's by Technos, (for the NES) the creators of the kunio kun characters. You probably haven't heard the name but once you see a sprite you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
http://emu-russia.km.ru/gdb/nes/Crash_%27n_the_Boys_-_Street_Challenge_1.pngYou'll compete in many events.
The basis of the game is this. The city gangs are holding a decathalon of sorts and you need to win the events. You compete in various mini game events to win. You can even buy items and upgrades like an rpg.
http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/kunio/crash-2.pngSome of these events are ridiculous.
Reasons to love it:
Cute characters
amazing graphics for a nes
rooftop unicycle ramping
8.North & South (nes)
http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/North_And_South_NES_ScreenShot1.jpgSuch a rare gem it is.
This game is about, you guessed it, the civil war. But unlike all those other civil war games, this one kicks major ass. Bright Colors and a unique control scheme make for one heck of an expierence.
http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/North_And_South_NES_ScreenShot2.jpgLooks like a lame sim you say? This is just the overhead map of the board. Ships will come and go and reload you with troops depending on your bases captured. You move battallions across the field until you have two enemies on one state.
http://www.nintendo5.webpark.pl/northsou.pngThis is were it shines. You get command of three types of troops. Cannons, horsemen and footsoldiers. You use one button to switch troops and the other to use your attack. Certain troops work better against others, you have to find a strategy that works best for you.
Reasons to love it:
1. History lessons rock!
2. 2 player!
3. Mini game missions to take over forts.
7. Contra Hard Corps
http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/games/drg000/g066/g06613x9d6z.jpgnotice the MA-13. One of the very first of it's kind.
http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Contra_Hard_Corps_GEN_ScreenShot1.jpg
This may not seem like such an obscure game, but you'd be surprised how few people actually played this. By far it is easily the best contra game to date.
It's by konami (Hmm I sense a pattern here) and it's for the genesis.
http://emu.makii.pl/imageroms/Contra_-_Hard_Corps_%28U%29_02.pngIt may look like all the other games, but Hard Corps has many many differences that set it apart.
First off, you get to chose your own character. No longer are you the generic beefy headband wearing bodybuilder (juji?) You can chose from 4 very different characters. A dude (All Around) a Chick(Fast) a Wolf (Close range heavy power) and a Robot.(Specialty)
Each have their own unique shots and power ups.
http://koti.mbnet.fi/ktalo/kapseli/pelit/2006--1/contra/md_contra_02.pngDid I mention the level design totally kicks the shit out of other games.
Reasons to love it:
Different characters means better replay value
You can branch off and chose your own path at points
Multiplayer!!!
It's hard
6. Rocket Knight Adventures
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b1/Rocket-knight-adventure.jpgO hey guess who made this sucker for the Genesis.
Rocket Knight adventures came out during the time when every company needed an anthropomorphic animal as it's mascot. During all this craze people started getting annoyed with the whole animal mascot genre, so people casually discarded Rocket Knight as one of the rest. Boy did they miss out.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/33/Rocket_Knight_Adventures.pngThe game takes place in an incredibly colorful and bright setting. You have a couple different attacks, most of them employing your Rocket Pack you have. The Core gameplay may not seem all that amazing during the first 2 minutes, but once you see how perfectly the level design is set up you will notice how perfect it can get.
http://segaworld.ifrance.com/rocket%20knight.JPG
each boss and level is tailored fit to your abilities. It's a constant challenge and rush to win.
Reasons to love it:
Konami
Colorful and bright
Fantastic music
Some of the best level design ever
5. Mischief Makers (n64)
http://n64.icequake.net/mirror/slaanesh79/Box_Art/Cart_Boxes/Mischief%20Makers%20%28U%29.jpg
This game is the jack of all trades. It has so much going for it. Puzzle game, brawler, Minigame, story, boss battles, mechas, humor...O man the list goes on.
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/0/197950/mischief_screen002.jpgA screen shot from one of the best boss battles in the game.
It's a 2d platformer at heart, but instead of punching and kicking, you grab things and toss them around. It's really quite innovative.
Grabbing enemies and shaking them for coins as the main character (A japanese robot maid) yells "shake shake"
Reasons to love it:
Incredibly engaging gameplay
Boss battles are amazingly fun
Pseudo 3d/2d graphics blend quite awesomely
The whole anime vibe is really kickass
SHAKE SHAKE!!
4.Thrasher; Skate and Destroy
http://images.rottentomatoes.com/images/games/coverg/22/602622.jpgYou may be wondering why I put a skating game on the list. "But Ben, we all have played tony hawk, we know all there is about skating games" Well this game could be more accurately called a "Skating SIM" because it's so god damn flowy and realistic.
http://www.cheatcc.com/psx/pics/thrashersad1.jpgFrom the makers of Rockstar (You know that means quality) and with a load of help from the acclaimed skating magazine "Thrasher" we get this incredibly realistic skating game.
Don't let the cartoony art style fool you, this game makes THPS look like a salvador Dali Painting.
http://www.games.net/screens/103833/3697-3-2.jpg
One of the main differences you'll find between this and THPS, is realism. No, you can't do a 900 land in a grind to get a million point combo on the second level in this game. Just a plain 540 is incredibly hard to land unless your the girl who specializes in spins.
In Tony Hawk, you ollied first, using the x button, then once in the air you did your kick flips and grabs.
http://www.games.net/screens/103833/3697-1-2.jpg
In thrasher however, and like real skating, all your tricks start from the ground. You can't jump in the air and then kick the board, you have a set jump button that does your flips. If you want to do a kickflip, you have to Hold that button down while your still on the ground or on a rail.
Simple stuff like this is what makes this game o so much more rewarding. If you have ever really skated before you'll appreciate this game. I often found myself just free skating on a level trying one set combo for hours and hours until I landed it. It wasn't even a big combo, it was something simple as "Kickflip 180 on the rail 360 off onto the ledge, nose manual to nollie flip
off"
http://www.games.net/screens/103833/3697-2-2.jpg
Another thing that needs to be mentioned is the music. Are you tired of heavy punk bands screaming out shitty songs (just the majority of THPS, there were some decent ones)?
Thrashers soundtrack features all 80's rap. That may sound incredibly goofy, but it fits sooooo well to hear Run Dmc or Rapper's delight playing as you have a street session.
http://www.games.net/screens/103833/3697-5-2.jpgIf you stay at one place too long, a cop or mugger will chase you.
Reasons to love it:
Realism rocks
Awesome soundtrack
Multiplayer games are incredibly addictive
Did I mention this was one of the first games to feature RagDoll physics? Something even Project 8 hasn't done.
Addictive
*Work in progress
