Don't be scared. Don't fuck up cuz it will be stored in your muscle memory.

film yourself, I bet you are jumping off one foot ( I can't even do a back flip yet)

try some other moves backwards first, like backhandspring.

Or simply get a spotter

like most ppl said its deftinately a fear thing. try every possible setup u can think of to reduce fear till u get the form good (tramoline, mats, spotters, pit, elevated start, even UNDERWATER if u need to). its such an ez move man, its all mental, u will get it!

I would say, don't go on a jumping mat, don't do it from a height.
Just get a spotter and a thick madrass then practice your backhand springs. Just stand still in position, focus to 100% and imagine yourself doing the trick so perfect you would wet your pants in amazement if you saw it recorded and then just do it. And as alexx said try to find something to follow while you do the backflip like a rope for example. After you have successfully done the backhand springs move on to back flips. ;)

All my backflips and backhand springs I did in the beginning I also bent myself to the right. Just get a madrass, spotter and imagine yourself doing it and it will be fine. Good luck mate =)

Peace

Everyone talks about muscle memory these days. And it's usually bullshit. bails don't get automatically stored in some non-erasable record that will fuck you up every time you try to do a trick. Muscle memory is built up over a long period of time. And even then it's not unchangeable.

In this case we are talking about fear it's the same thing that everyone (who didn't take gymnastics from age 4) goes through. It's not your 'muscle memory' fucking you over, you're just scared to go over backwards.

edit: This is mostly directed towards the 3rd and 4th posts.

Try to find a spot in front of you and focus hard on it. Then take a deep breath and breathe out as you jump. Don't stop looking at your target before you have to go back! (don't lean your head back)

when i was first practicing i would always dig my legs in and crouch much lower than i had to. this would throw me off because 1.) my legs were doing more work, and getting less hight and 2.) since i was relying on legs so much, my right leg did more work, since its my dominant leg. it wasnt till later when i was shown that i only had to bend my legs a tiny bit and use my arms a shitload more, when i was able to maximize hight and stability. so try just bending your legs a little, it even'd me out alot more. also like said before spot infront of you, and once your over yourself then spot the ground.

Ok Read Juji tutorial again. And this is main points that helped me

1) get spotter
2) get him/her to support you back (make sure they are strong enough to keep you up)
3) Keep going over and over, drill it with the spotter
4) When you can jump high enough without getting scared just try and jump as high as you can, And before you notice the spotter wont even be spotting you, you would have jumped clean above his arm.

Get the spotter to support you back, So IF you crash he can support you so the crash isnt that bad, PLUS dont get him to spin you or flip you over, Cause when he aint there your in for a shock,

Dont shit out! All the pro gym guys and trickers have all gone through the same thing as you

Try one of these. (http://www.wotnext.com.au/playVideo.asp?page=search&sortby=&dir=&cat=backflip&date=&paginate=&id=4261) :)

Yeah yeah, I know... I still have to get it on the ground.

But shit these things are fun!!!!

Ever since Dogen put out his tutorials, Mike, everyone has been spouting bullshit about "muscule memory", "j-step", "blocking", and so forth, even when people can't even do the tricks they're trying to give advice on.

It's annoying to see people who are like "just block lol" when someone asks for help on a roundoff move, or saying "It's muscule memory, lol" when help is needed on a backflip or an aerial, or even "ur not doin a jstep, thats why ur not gettin it lol" for gainer moves. Blocking is ONLY FOR ENHANCING MOVES WITH A PUNCH. J-step is BASED OFF OF OPINION, IT IS NOT THE CURE ALL FOR GAINER MOVES. Mucsule memory, God, don't get me started. Ask any experienced trickster if "muscule memory" got them any tricks. At best, it's for retaining moves already gotten. In reality, it's just an over-hyped concept.

Dogen's tutorials are nice and all, but it's brainwashing people. People need EXPERIENCE AND PERCEPTION in order to provide viable advice, not some tutorials that, in all honesty, gives some advice that is so obvious and elementary, or so far-fetched that it's like a science project.

Ugh.

Yeah yo, muscle memory and blocking and all that shit. Its there but its like 90% mostly in the head. The thought of it is scaring people. Dude, I've tried the back flip like so many times and I'm still trying.

I'm constantly like landing on my knees and sometimes with my face hitting the ground but that doesn't stop me from doing it again.

once you actually get around, you'll keep doing it. Just don't jump sraight up and straight back down on your head.

Its all in the head. stop being scared. If I ever get a digital camera, I'll actually show you my bails.

I've had this as well during the initial learing period.
I swung in over my left shoulder all the time, fuck was I mad, the thing was
stuck in my "muscle memory" (fear I guess).

What I did:
From just doing the shit over and over, failing, I took a little
break to sum it up, thought of the move etc.
Now to the next session of hopefully straight backflips!
As I jumped over my shoulder, I noticed were I placed my sight was important, so to really overdo it, I'd jump with trying to look at the sky and around. But! Do not keep the eye's focused there, look around towards the ground. Also, I had in mind were my legs went, and I put those tight together and swung 'em straight up along with my sight going straight backward. Of course this was only to take away the muscle memory from former flips.

When the crap is gone, build it from there and you'll do it
