is it better to have your feet pointed to the sky when doing the side splits(i think thats what its called. i always mix up the name LOL) or should feet face forward?

pointed looks better but pulled back is more of a stretch on the back of the legs.

meh, personal preference.

I think UPwards to the sky looks more HARDCORE

@mac: do whatever feels better ( knees, hips etc )

do both. They're different stretches, however slight it may be. I find that toes up puts more stress on the knees, but I still work both.

they are effectively the same stretch, just with the hip in different positions.

pointing forward wins every time.

Maybe which is harder varies between people. One is with the hip/ankle internally rotated, the other externally.

I like seeing vids where people just rotate easily between the two.

Being capable of that would make it easy to go from front split to side split to the other front split.

There's toes up, toes forward, and toes forward with chest on the ground which is a lot like toes up just without weight on the legs. Helps with turnoud since the ground can lever your leg out with the foot, controlled with the hands.
