hey I'm trying to learn how to 540. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I can't land on the proper leg. =(

im having the same problem, except im a little closer than you to landing it. I land with my feet pretty much together, but when i try to land on my kick leg, i always slip out and fall.
The only tips i can give u would be to do a faster take off, keep swinging your arms in the air (you cut the spinning motion short by stopping your arms when u kick), and maybe lean back a bit. Good Luck!

hmm well i can 540 actually, but it's forced and ugly. I'm trying to get a real legit and clean 540 though.

You really really really REALLY need to use your arms man, TKD andy has a tutorial for 540s lying around somewhere, although mine is quite shoddy at the moment, his helped me get mine down properly instead of it being like a 1 every 5 attempts kinda thing.
Keep your non kicking leg tucked and you will land it nicely I think o_o

same problem here. i think its because im not tucking my non-kicking leg, but when i try to tuck im worried i am gonna fall on my knee or shin and damage something.
all i have to work with is carpet and grass =P
try to lift up your non kicking leg?

Nah, that's not the reason :/... And btw., arubato. You're doing some kinda' cheat feilong. Throw your non kicking leg up bent, as hard as you can, and kick over it. And throw your arms up as hard as you can.

lift that non kicking leg like a bitch and you should just land the worst thats gona hapen is u will slip the landing and fall but it dsnt hurt on grass
Decent advice thus far, but let's see if we can put it all together: It's all about co-ordination.
Your lift will be best if you can really get those arms whipping up (and around) along with your leg, as this will ensure that your body torques as a single unit (as opposed to a shamble of loose flesh) so the leg comes up naturally.
Also, forcing the kick will undermine your initial jump from the kicking leg: you have to at least jump otherwise all that nice momentum from the step in and whip will go to waste. As your body stalls, the leg should catch up and come through as long as you keep the non-kicking leg up, keep your body conformation relatively wrapped (and, as juji's tute says, it really helps to chamber that non-kicking leg.)
Personally, the first time I got (and lost, because I don't train enough) this move, the main problem was the non-kicking leg. I started throwing it tucked like for a 540-hook, only directing my motion around, not up. The arms working together with the legs are what really helps me carve the kick out in a lovely arc.
