A friend of mines brother who rows for GB has just had his tonsils removed.... simply to increase his VO2 max in each breath.
what do you think aboiut that? Its pretty crazy to have surgery just for that!
Correct me if I'm wrong but tonsils are there to absorb infections or are they just rudimentary like our appendix and tailbone?

tonsils do help to fight infection, theyre the first port of call for most infections simply becuase of where they are in the body.

They absorb infection so you might as well keep them. Ironically the only infections I ever get are tonsilitus. No colds, no flu, just tonsilitus twice a year.
I-HATE-Tonsilitis. It is so goddamned annoying because you never know when it's going to subside. And yeah if you get it twice a year I suggest getting the tonsils removed because they're basically in the way then. Unless it's not a big deal that is.
I had mine taken out because they were causing me to have horrible ear infections...
if they're swollen often or even chronically, it pretty much makes sense to take them out.
I guess that's the reason, why your friend's brother got them taken out.

Did he do it himself with rusty pliers? Because that would be bad ass.
Also, I think he wasted his time. He should try running or something practical.

lol, he's a fucking unit, trust me. He's officially 'too short' for the GB rowing team, but they let him row for them because he's just so_fucking_strong.
Amazing genetics, his brother who i'm really good mates with weighs 62kg and can C+J 77.5kg, bicep curl (cable) 48kg and squat over twice his bodyweight.
to me, thats fawking strong.

........................but jogging is still more practical than minor surgery.

Maybe not to a rower who doesn't want to waste energy jogging when he can be doing more sport specific exercises.
nope, he got them removed simply to increase his VO2 max!
How did that dumbfuck find a doctor to do this?
And actually...unless they're swollen chronically, it won't have any impact on his athletic performance.
Sometimes my faith in darwinism shakes.
I got my tonsils taken out when I was 7. Ever since then, my VO2 max has been superhuman-like!
It actually did make it a lot easier to breath. But that's because they were incredibly swollen.
