stiffleg 540 landing

everytime I land, my heel drives straight in the ground, and it hurts! How do I land more softly?

bend your knee to absorb impact!

The reason it is urting is probably because you aren't getting enough height. Drill tornados on the side with the main focus being on getting more height so you can land lighter and control your landings better.

Haha dude.

Look at your own avatar.

Rotate into the landing.

get an arch-ier kick. that should help with a smoother landing. the landing would also be smoother if you lean back more during the execution of the kick

Land on the ball of your foot, not your heel. Think about it- what sounds more graceful to you, landing like a ninja cat all nice and softly, or slamming all your weight into the ground through the back of your foot (AWKWARD!)? And rotate into the landing as Skillzat said, when you watch samplers you'll notice a lot of people do at least another half turn after they land.

Bingo. Basically.. dont ever put your heel down.

Thing is, If my heel doesn't come down, I crash a horrible bloody death. It just hits, so I can't really control it.

Can you jump and land on the balls of your feet? If so, you can land a 540 that way. If not...weird.

Yes, but I don't have enough height or spin.

Don't be biased.

I'm not being biased...I'm saying that it's physically possible for you to land like that. Practice landing tornado kicks lightly on your feet, because a good tornado kick will have the same force as a 540 just without kicking over (you'll still feel the momentum behind the kicking foot), and once you can land them gracefully then the transition to doing your 540s that way should be easier.

How was I being biased? I'm genuinely curious. Butttttttt I'll have to wait till tomorrow to find out, I'm off to bed. Toodles!

My first attempts at 540s are the reasons i have shin splints now, there is just a fine line where your tornados arent fast enough and you dont quite have any business doing 540s. The pain your are experiencing is the fact that you arent getting enough air, so you are still trying to complete the rotation of your 540 while you are landing, ie rapidly accelerating into the ground at an angle. Higher 540s afford you the luxury of completing the kick, and having enough time to 'float' into the landing, because the rotation of the kick is complete. Also I recommend to reach for the ground with the ball of the foot, because it is cushioned to absorb impact, and also it is essential for pivoting when you decide to combo. Hope this helps

I'll take that advice to mind.

Your comment just seemed to approach one aspect of my problem. You might not have been, it could've been just how I read it.

Yes, it helped. Thanks!
