This isn't my first post, I have an old account, I just forgot the pass and username.

So I'm 15, Chinese, 5'8", and about 140 pounds. In terms of strength and endurance, I'd say my abilities are above average. I'm not satisfied with my physique though; my upper body is seriously lacking muscle, but the fat is definitely noticeable. My lower body has some mass (I can do one legged squats  ), but there's a layer of fat covering it.

I think what I am is skinny-fat. If I throw on jeans and a t-shirt, I look great; not fat at all.

Now, I recently got Ross Enamait's new book, "Never Gymless". He suggests that, as long as you eat healthy, natural foods and use common sense (eat less to lose weight, eat more to gain weight), you don't have to count calories. I hope that shit's true because counting calories isn't really an option for me. I won't be getting back to the states 'til summer, and I can assure you my grandma knows fuck-all about the nutritional statistics of her oh-so-delicious cashew chicken. Protein shakes and raw veggies are going to be very hard to obtain.

I was thinking that I would get rid of my bodyfat, and then start building muscle. I'm not interested in a bodybuilding-type program of progressive overload and over-feeding because, even though rock hard abs and ripped physique are one my goals, I also want functional strength. As for my current goal, losing fat, I was thinking of simply eating a big breakfast, medium sized lunch, and small dinner, with snacks consisting of fruits and nuts between meals. And cardio and HIIT too, of course.

Does this sound reasonable? Any advice?

It's bad to buy into the idea that bodybuilding doesn't build functional strength. Really, the only proven 'functional' thing for something is direct training for that something. Ross Enamait has advocated weightlifting in his past books too. Also, never read Matt Furey.

Okay, to be more specific and technically correct, I'm more interested in explosive and maximal strength than getting huge (but like I said, getting ripped while doing it = HIGHFIVE). I'm not against weightlifting either, it's just calisthenics are more readily availible and I don't know much about working with weights. And yes, I've heard enough about Matt Furey to know to stay away from his stuff.

Now bring on the advice! :)

i followed this over the summer and i was making amazing gains... that is until i broke my ankle. i'm getting it back though.

some of these excercises are olympic level though, so what i did was hired a guy to help me weight train, and he showed me what i guess you could call the prerequisits to them, or just the easier types. this setup is practically my bible though.

if you get to the point that you really enjoy it, start using supplements. i only use weight gainers and whey. but for slim muscle maybe creatine?
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/likness2.htm
i dont use it though so i dont know too much about it.

Apr-04-07, 08:22 AM
Yeah, I don't really have access to weights though. The problem's not transporation (I'll run there if I have to) or time, it's more of a financial thing. Besides, I don't think I'll be outgrowing calisthenics anytime soon; how many people that work with weights can do one arm chin ups? ;)

As for supplementation, I will consider whey and maybe creatine, once I do a bit more research about them, thanks. Does my eating plan sound alright though?

lol thers no way we can comment on your eating plan if this is all youve got! Be way more specific, work out how many grams of protein, fats and carbs you eat a day and where they come from.

I don't want eating to become a chore, anyway. Maybe I could figure out what I was putting into my body if I spent hours poring over every ingredient that went into what I ate (when you buy shit in china in the farmer's market, they don't slap on nutrition labels for you), but that seems a bit extreme for me.

i don't do that, you don't need to do that. shit is easy son and it's been covered on TT before, so just read up bro! it's the meat (beefs, chickens, turkeys, porks, salmons, tunas, dogs, eels, deers), vegetables (spinachs, tomatoes, celerys, broccolis, XTC), fruit (pineapples, bananas, mangoes, oranges, pears, lemons) where all the money is at. refer to your local library for help with identifying said organisms. also peanuts, milk, cottage cheese, beer, eggs, the rap genre of music and porn is good for you. and don't eat anything that comes in BAR-form. or anything that's being pushed by a major corporation (ever seen an ad for broccoli? that's because THEY don't want you healthy, they want you fat and miseable so they can feed their kids with your paycheck (life's a bitch too you know?)). oh, and don't do drugs until you're 18.
you my friend are lucky because you can just take your green down to said market and buy pretty much what you want.
cheers!

edit: also it looks like you want to be bruce lee as well so why don't you just shoot yourself. if you can lift yourself with one arm and i can lift you and your family, who's strength is more functional? oh, i see, you don't want to look good naked. so, If you someday you get to look good naked you can say "yeah well this you just came with the package, i didn't want to look good, this just kind of happened because i'm super smart and super talented", but you're not because people with your goals Never Go Anywhere. grow some balls and hit the gym, pur-lease.
AND i can tell your fronting and in self-denial because in truth, ALL you want to do is look good naked so you get to ejaculate. how do you like dem apples?

Even if wanting to look sexy is shallow and shit, if you recognize a better reason, then harnessing the want for sexy for willpower in those shallow primal times to keep going is a good tactic!

Relevant in what way? One, you seem to have neglected the fact that I am in fucking China, so no, I can't stroll down to the "local library" and grab readily accessible books about identifying meats or whatever the hell you were on about, no, I won't be encountering anything in bar form, and no, fucking broccoli pushing corporations have nothing to do with this thread.

If you had a long enough attention span to read something longer than the trashy porn mags stuffed under your cum stained mattress, you would've noticed that I mentioned "looking good naked" IS one of my goals. And somehow, somehow, you managed to get it into your head that the fact I'm not all that interested in body building means I want to look like Bruce Lee. As for growing balls and hitting the gym, the only way that would help is if I grew some fucking magical balls that shedded franklins. My financial resources are thin atm.

I would recommend exercising that steaming pile of pig shit you call a brain once in a while.

Hi snowbuddha I'm jazzy it's nice to meet you etc etc.

Now, I admit I don't have a very thorough knowledge of nutrition or working out, so if anyone would like to recommend some type of nutritional program that doesn't involve counting calories, or share some advice, that'd be great. Thanks.

I counted a couple of f-words in there. Watch your tongue! /sarcasm

Anyway, regarding nutrition you'll do that homework yourself since following a nutrition plan without knowing shit about it will make you utterly crash and burn. www.t-nation.com is a good starting site, use the "Beginners" section. Remember that carbs, fat and protein are all good and none should be cut back in any extreme way.

It's up to you how you want to go about exercising, we can only give you so much but ultimately it's up to you how much time and effort you are going to spend on your own well being.

Jazzy
Apr-05-07, 09:34 AM
I browse T-Nation once in a while, and I seem to remember reading "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle" a while ago. I'll do some more poking around for tidbits about nutrition though, thanks.

Kimimaro
Apr-05-07, 02:03 PM
Lol, I'd say its his physique rather that wanting to look like him. >_>
I'd assume alot of people use him for example so much because theres no one who doesn't know what Bruce Lee looked like. Hell, I doubt so many people would get upset if Steve Terada was the example instead : P.
Hell, they both look like they have the same build to me.

But anyway, Bruce Lee did alot of cross training..ect, and he did lift alot of weights. When he started out he got massive and buff, it didn't fit him and it made him feel slow, so he got small and worked on explosive strength and the such, but either way he still lifted weights. Not sure what I'm getting at, just do shit like this: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoID=1844124574

I'm not sure if that link works, you may have to be his friend, but its a decent tutorial, its what I work on. Try some aerobic workouts, just whatever feels healthy for your body and gives you a burn. Thats how I look at it, I'm not as well informed as alot of the people here. In fact just forget anything I said haha.

I am in fucking China

that about sums up my thoughts on the subject.

seriously though, my initial answer answers your queries about what sort of food you should be eating. if you can't process this, then who is to blame?
if you don't have access to a gym, get a bag, fill it with stone or sand and to bodyweight exercises. if you want EXPLOSIVE strength then perform pushups, pull-ups, dips, squats or whatever with EXPLOSIVENESS. am I getting through to you? i hope so.

and yeah you got me good with those insults man, "cum-stained mattresses".
what can i say, i guess i just love to jerk it :)

Okay, where the fuck did this Bruce Lee thing come from? I never even mentioned the guy until snowbuddha starts ranting about him. Way to be presumptuous and before you reply, try reading my posts. You are contributing absofuckinglutely nothing to this thread. If you want to talk about Bruce Lee, there's a few threads about him on TT.

that about sums up my thoughts on the subject.

I've been doing bodyweight exercises, and I eat the shit you've been on about. Everything you bring up has already been addressed in one of my previous posts, but to realize that, you have to try reading. Thanks again for contributing nothing to this thread.

@Kimi: Again, I still have no idea where this Bruce Lee came from. I'm not interested in copying his training program or "looking like him", but thanks for trying to be helpful. As for the video: It won't load for me, but I'm guessing the "pistol" is the one legged squat? What's the body press?

you will find out that talking that shit will get your face fucked up one day or the other. you think you're a fucking intellectual? you think your engrish good?
contributing nothing to this thread? this thread IS NOTHING, it consists of you have your ego rubbed by internet-persons. get the fuck over yourself dude..

Apr-07-07, 03:24 PM
Its pulling yourself into a tucked planch, on your hands and knees, hands 6 inches past your knees, lean forward and tuck them up to your stomach and suck up your abs as you flex them. Do that repeatedly and try to hold your knees as close to your chest as you possibly can before dropping them back down to the ground and repeating. It utilizes alot of muscle tention overall from your body. Sorry if that didn't make too much sense, its not easy to explain, you'd probably have to see an example of it. Anyway, I'm done. : )

Oh btw, you might wanna take a little advice from Snowbuddha, new members who don't act politely or show rude behavior get banned all the time.
