View Full Version : How healthy is your heart?

What are your resting pulse rates?

As we all know, athletes such as some of ourselves have lower resting pulse rates than others, because they have trained their heart to pump more blood in one beat than other people who don't exercise as much. Therefore, our heart doesn't need to beat as many times as it would normally, thus prolonging life and whatnot.

I'm just interested to see some of the resting pulse rates we have here at TT. It's also interesting to find out yourself if you never have before.

According to a biology book in my lap, here is a guideline for resting pulse rates:

Pulse rate at rest:

less than 50
50-59
60-69
70-79
80 and over...

Check the corresponding number to your pulse rate below, to find your level of fitness:

Level of fitness:

outstanding
excellent
good
fair
poor (fat bastard)

NB: For those who don't know, to take your resting pulse rate you must first be at rest, i.e. sitting down, relaxed, having been so for a period of time. You can either take your pulse from your wrist, neck or other... errm, pulsing places.

You must count it for 15 seconds, and then multiply it by 4.

Or, if you wish to be more accurate, count it for 30 seconds and multiply by 2.

Or, for total accuracy, just count it for a whole minute.

I took mine before typing this and it's about 56.

Impressive!

Miguel Indurain, who won the Tour De France five times in a row (I think?) had a resting pulse rate of about 28 bpm.

Can we use our yogic skills? Mine's about 60 (without yogic skills).

28 seems crazy low. I wonder what the record lowest is/was.

Yeah, I suppose anything that helps relax you completely. But bear in mind that it's a resting pulse rate, so you'll not always be as relaxed as your are when you use your yogic skills.

I'm not sure what the record was. Many people think it's dangerous to have such a low resting pulse rate but there's a difference between a low resting pulse rate that pumps a LOT of blood around the body and a low resting pulse rate that pumps no where near the same volume of blood.

I wish I could find a more accurate system, but at the moment this is all I can find without paying money. I have a blood pressure monitor that also records pulse rate, but it works on the same principle: it pushes the blood vessels up against something, which causes the elastic recoil that blood vessels have to resonate.

Something like that...

Take it more than once. Maybe you're not completely at rest?

Apparently the best time to take your pulse is the moment you wake up in the morning, without getting out of bed. I'm too busy bashing my alarm clark though.

It's interesting finding out what everyone does to keep their pulse rates so low. I dance (ballet) and that acts as my main cardio work. I also have a trampoline! :punched:

I want to get out there and run more though. I shall in the next couple of weeks - finally it's the summer.

54 right now. cool. only thing is that it wasnt too consistent. every few beats there would be two really close to one another, and for the second 15 seconds (i measured for 30) the beat was just generally faster than the first. what does that mean?

If you are pressing with your thumb it means you're feeling the pulse in your thumb as well. Otherwise it means nothing.

:good: Like any sane human being then!

Random tip of the day kids: When checking for the pulse on the wrist you must never use your thumb. The reason for this is because the pulse is slightly weaker in your wrist and your thumb has it's own pulse. So in this matter you would mix it up with your own. The guy could be dead and you're standing there like a douchebag yelling "He's alive!! Get him a blanket!" when you should be yelling "He's dead, bodybag please".

Its not unusual to be at ~60bpm without any exercise. I think most young people will be 60bpm or under, regardless of exercise taken, unless they are overweight.

theres a WHOLE lot more to a healthy heart than just the beats per minute. we're talkin buku here. if you really want to find out the health of your heart, you need to draw specific labs, get an ekg at the very least. you could have significant blockage in your arteries...most likely not though (if youre under 60).

the body is a very durable thing. it can take alot. and you being only 27, i dont believe you have anything to worry about. if youre worried though, you can ask for an ekg and some labs to check. the doctor might look at you strangely though, seeing as you probably have no symptoms of any heart conditions.

so ultimately, if you dont have chest pains, if you dont feel flutters, if they dont hear murmers or arrhythmia, then dont worry about it. ultimately, youre still alive, so it cant be that bad :P

I agree. I would love to go to a laboratory and be poked and prod all day long on an array of machines, have an ecg, etc. etc. Sadly, I can't afford the trouble - I just find it interesting to see at a basic level what my pulse rate is, during exercise and at rest to make an extremely rough estimation at what my stroke volume is (really rough estimation).

how fast? Im not saying you aren't fit but an unfit fat man could do a 2 mile run 2-3 times a week and it take him an hour.

also heart rate is not an accurate gauge of fitness, there are 100000 other different factors in it (e.g. blood count, size of glycogen stores).

Apr-18-07, 10:59 AM
I have something wrong with my heart because my heart beat is very irregular. I should probably see a doctor or something. Anyway, 67... but it ranged from about 50 to 120 at times through the minute.

I had to take my rest pulse for a college class and I had, 47 the first time and 46 the second (two different days). But I don't think that the rest heartbeat is the only factor to consider if someone is fit or not. I consider myself fit, but I don't think i'm outstanding.

I'm 60 BPM at the moment. The only physical activity I do is walking to class and weight-training 3x per week.

Honestly, RHR by itself is a horrible indicator of fitness. What you really want to know is your VO2 max along with your RHR as well as how fast your HR recovers after physical activity.

If you want to stay rudimentary though, and you have not yet started a fitness program, your current untrained RHR vs. your future trained RHR will be a decent indicator of cardiovascular progress.

Keep in mind that RHR is also one of the ways you can test for level of recovery. If your RHR is a few beats faster than usual one morning, it's likely you haven't had sufficient recovery from your workouts. Another indicator would be grip strength, but you need a dynamometer to reliably measure it.

i dont do 'cardio' i guess, unless sprint intervals are cardio (which ive just started)
didnt think it'd be THAT low
Sprint intervals are one of the best ways to bring your RHR down. They are absolutely cardio. Cardio is any activity that significantly elevates your HR for a prolonged duration of time.

lets see..i have minimal blockage. i smoke, drink, trick almost daily, excercise weekly. 21 y/o male with no family history of heart conditions/cancer.

pulse: 50-60
bp: usually runs around 115/60
respiratory rate: around 12 breaths per minute
oxygen saturation: 98% to 100%
ekg is normal...shows a strong heart...but not TOO strong ;]
level of fitness: outstanding

...bitches.

**edit: heart rates below 60 arent neccesarily good. depending on if you excercise or not..but its a condition called bradychardia (slow heartbeat). usually seen in corrilation with low oxygen saturation and other things. in any case...typically marathon runners or people that do alot of cardio have pulses below 60. 40's is pushin it (im a bit skeptical about the 28bpm of the tour de france guy...that seems not right..but ill look into it). then again..ive seen marines with pulses of like..45 and its just cuz excercising is their life haha..
