What would be a good pre-workout shake? My schedule has been changed so I no longer have the time to sit down and eat something before training, I pretty much would have to walk home, dumb my things and head straight to the gym.

Milk, whey, bananas, and maby some peanutbutter?

Ditch the peanut butter. You need amino acids (whey is fine in this case) and some carbs. A banana or two will work.

*Edit* Forgot about the milk, ditch that to. Thanks for the reminder Kris.

If you ditch the peanut butter, you also want to ditch the milk if you are following Rahf´s argumentation.
I usually just get a scoop of whey, maybe some glutamine, rarely fruit and when the workout begins the carbs start coming in.

Why ditch the milk? It's low fat, and just plain healthy from what I know (good protein source, adequate carbs and such). Not to mention that water-whey tastes shit.

It's like making chocolate on water!!!!

The protein will take a longer time to metabolize if you take it with milk and what you're after pre-workout are easily accessible amino acids. Granted that milk still gives your insuline a good boost but I'd skip it at least pre-workout. Your PWO shake can contain milk.

Boohoohoo. Grow up and just drink it. It doesn't taste bad. So it's watered down powder, big deal. You're drinking a protein shake afterall, not a chocolate malt.

My friend Dom never really has Whey after workouts but always before and his arms are huge.

I used to drink WHEY with milk but now with my new stuff it only recommends water so I just went straight for it, it's only water and it's ten times more effective than milk in getting that shit in your muscles quicker.

I drink milk post workout, and I bet I am superior than AJCN.

Most likely since I've only taken it for a year and only this month everyday.

My point is that whey is not a miracle supplement that gives people big arms. Whey is not needed, it is only convenient.

And Honken, listen to Swartz, dont cry about it chug it down it's not a milkshake.

Carbs should definitely be chosen PWO. People stare themselves blind on the whey all the time.

Why avoid carbohydrates before a workout?

And oh yeah, the real answer is: it doesn't really matter...

If your OVERALL CALORIC INTAKE is high enough, you will gain muscle. Really, the only other thing would be to ingest some sort of carbohydrates within an hour after your weightlifting session..

Until you can do those 2 things correctly, and gain scale weight and muscle mass, then all this other shit doesn't matter.

I never stated that. What I did state was that carbs are essential PWO. ASAP after the workout and then a carb loaded meal about an hour later to refill your glycogen.

And yeah, if your overall caloric intake coupled with a decent protein intake is sufficient, PWO protein does not matter. Ingesting whey protein or pure amino acids before a workout is to hinder muscle catabolism.

actually my question was directed to the thread as a whole, not your post in particular.. people just seemed to be reasoning somehow that carbohydrates pre-workout is a bad thing

And I personally wouldn't recommend to someone to get in some carbohydrates "ASAP after a workout!", because then you get people slugging down smoothies literally the minute they put down the weight from their last set haha

Just eat some carbohydrates within an hour of working out. Get enough calories, workout with a progressive load and manipulate volume to gain muscular weight.

PEOPLE COMPLICATE THINGS TOO MUCH

Ingesting carbs immediately after a workout is only a good thing. They should be taken as soon after the workout as possible. I'm not saying ASAP as in "OMG you're going to die if you don't get carbs in within 5 minutes". My point was that the first carbs you take would in this case be in your PWO shake. And after that you would have a carb filled meal whenever it suited you. It comes naturally anyway, I'm hungry as a bear after my workouts.

And no, you don't need to rush the actual drinking of the PWO drink.

Not saying that I can't chug water-whey, just merely stating that whey with milk is a hell lot tastier than with water.

Aren't carbs essential before a workout? The closest meal between school and training is our shitty-lunch approx 4 hours before training, wouldn't most of the lunch be digested and used by then?

Carbs before a workout is pretty much individual. Carbs provide you with energy and some prefer to have a meal right before a workout to give them that boost. What you want to watch out for pre-workout is that you do get some protein into your body. Amino acids are needed to prevent muscle catabolism. In the long run it won't matter if you are on a calorie surplus, but it might be a good idea if you're just looking to improve strength and preserve muscle.

You should have a snack say 1-2 hours before so you don't go on a completely empty stomach.

During my workouts you mean? Nope, I just drink water. My energy comes from being constantly angry at stuff. I will maybe add it at some later stage but right now I don't feel like I need it.
