Does anyone do this? I am mainly concerned about HIV needles and shit like that.

Yeah. I guess HIV needles are a theoretical risk but then again, those could probably penetrate shoes too. It kind of sucks when there's morning dew out though, it can get cold.

I wish they let you run barefoot on gym treadmills, that'd rock.

Huh. I wonder how it's better for your feet that way. I figured it'd wreck your knees and ankles because of the impact going straight to the feet, without padding to cushion it.

If nothing else, you can get some Nike Frees, the shoes that are supposed to mimic barefoot running. My friend has a pair, swears by them.

However, they could be gimmick, and they're a tad bit pricey.

Yesterday I ran barefoot on concrete, and then walked all day with no shoes, too. It felt awesome, I intend to continue the experiment, and get some flat-soled sandles too

running on concrete is hard on your joints so I wouldn't recommend it.
Also I wouldn't bother about HIV needles, but rather about dog shit.

The first link after reading it basically summarizes something into this:
"There is some unseen link in the benefits of barefoot running but altogether inconclusive."

As for the site runningbarefoot.org, thier main argument is that Kenyans and Ethiopians are the best runners in the world because they have learned to run properly barefoot. However, I tend to disagree on the fact argument because they are only good runners because their lifestyle in the country demands running over many other countries thus their superiority.

In debate, running barefoot is not truly necessary. The main culprit is heel-striking which is painful when running barefoot. Heel-striking on itself will slow down the runner anyway so running barefoot is ideally not worth the risk-especially with the amount of dog shit lying around these days.

well, I'm not interested in competitive performance, but for general foot/leg health (at least outside of sport) I can't conceive how wearing shoes could be safer than going unshod.

Don't run barefoot on concrete. Do you think the structure of our joints was evolved to deal with such a hard surface? Obviously not.

I walk without shoes all the time.
When I need shoes, I wear sandals.
When I run, I run with properly fitted cross-country shoes on grass, dirt, or mulch only.

You can run without shoes on the treadmill if you want to. I wouldn't advise it though.

Running barefoot is good

Running barefoot on concrete is unnatural and a surefire way to fuck up your joints... permanently :dead:

Benefits include developing tougher feet (thicker skin etc).

Benefits of whacking your head against a wall also include the development of tougher skin.

meh, I only ran a few 100m, very slow jog. I don't intend to actually run on concrete. I'll do so on grass, though, fo sho. I need to get some sandals, I can't find any that aren't totally retarded.

We're fine running barefoot on the stuff that's not manmade that we would have went on a lot, like grass, soft soil, water, muddy riverbeds, etc. The soft soles of shoes sort of help to simulate that when we need to run on concrete. I've run barefoot on concrete and it is pretty killer. I can't help but think it toughens you somehow but definately not a staple.

I did some sprints on grass two days ago with bare feet. My calves were strangely pumped afterwads and are still very DOMSed today. Not surprising, really - completely different foot involvement. But now running in trainers feels increasingly weird. Even walking. I need some flat-soled sandals ASAP but I can't find any.

I went out in bare feet into a parking lot in a blistering son carrying 3 bags of soil in through the house to the back yard. But when I tried to open my back door one of them slid out and busted on the rug, it was horrible. I think it was partially my bitch's fault.
