They need to put a guide out on how much you should be able to back/front squat ATG before attempting pistols, I figure slightly more than your BW to take into account the harder balance as well as lifting your other leg and stuff.

Step-ups and lunges probably help too. Uni-limb!

No but they put a great stress on your knees. I can pull off one or two pistols but afterwards I feel like my knee(s) are about to explode.

They're hard for me since I have to hold a lot of weight in front to not fall backward.

My knees make ripping/tearing sounds each time I do stuff like that. :(

I've never had knee problems with pistols; I do them consistently because i can't afford weights yet (saving up). You just need to make sure that your form is perfect; push through the heel and it shouldn't bother your knees.

I concur

When I first tried pistols my knees were killing me aswell, however by keeping reps low and stopping a set whenever pain started its easy to strengthen the knee adequately. Pistols really aren't hard.

Pistols are really not that hard. I have never felt like I derived a huge benefit from doing them that I didn't get from doing ATG front & back squats... then again, if you didn't have barbells and a rack available, they are probably the next best thing.

Only do it on one side my other knee is always bad and I just can't go down all the way, it's gonna blow up.
