View Full Version : Where did the name "tricking" come from?

This has been bugging me recently. Although no one can entirely claim credit for creating "tricking" as far as I know (although some, not saying any names, have tried) I have always wondered how the name "tricking" came up. How did this name become popular and when was it thought up of?

My guess would be the word "kick" without the "k", and a "tr" prefix in its place: Coined for special skills. If not, then the word "trick" literally means stuff like "a quick or artful way of getting a result", "a crafty procedure or practice", "an optical illusion", "a deceptive, dexterous, or ingenious feat; especially : one designed to puzzle or amuse" // People probably just started calling them tricks naturally.
See how fitting it is?

I know it comes from the expression "martial arts trickbusting" or something like that. Or perhaps it comes from Bilang ("martial arts tricks")
martial arts trickbusting sounds about right

it came from one of the old variations of the name but i heard butch marks coined tricking.

when people ask me what I'm doing I don't say
"I'm tricking"
I say:
"I'm performing an array of aerial maneuvers that will eventually turn me into a bisexual"
actually nobody ever asks because I only trick in my backyard/basement, but If they did that's what I'd say.
recently someone said are you doing capoeria??
All i was doing was drilling aerials though!
I replied by simply saying no and continuing on my merry aerialing way!
If someone ever asked me and I knew the person and wanted to give a good answer though I'd probably say "it's called tricking, basically a mix between martial arts, gymnastics and breakdancing"
we must spread the knowledge people!

Dont spread the word!
Its much cooler tricking when only a limited number of people (us ^_^) do it!
saying "this is called tricking" instead of "this is called kung fu/flipping/gymnastics/capoeria/etc" isnt gonna make everyone in the world start tricking

Exactly. Don't hide from your own sport, explain it to people, spread the word!!!
And I'm with Juji on this one, "trick busting" came around later...

I would venture to say that every single one of the people in the social circle that I would refer to as my "friends" know what tricking is.
In fact, most of them say things to me like, "Hey, did you go tricking this weekend?" or, "Are you still doing that "tricking" stuff?"
I don't see why anyone wouldn't call what we're doing "tricks" first and then explain what it means. When people had just started skateboarding, snowboarding, roller blading or surfing, hell even when they first played basketball or baseball or whatever... they all had to tell spectators what it was called because nobody knew.
The people that had just heard the name didn't know exactly what it entailed or what the rules were, but when they saw people doing it later they could recognize it and it had a name in their brain... such is the essence of language.
I know some people are thinking, "But all those names have something to do with the equipment you use or the surface you do it on... they make sense!"
Well, so far as I can tell, "tricks" perfectly describes what we do ("Martial Arts Tricks" is even better).
What is it called when you do something cool on a skateboard, surfboard or rollerblades?
A trick!
But we don't use boards or wheels or anything other than our own bodies... and "Bodying" sounds fucking retarded... so what are you left with to describe what we do?
The action itself.
Tricking.
It seems like a logical progression to me.
Now whether you decide to call yourself a "trickster" or a "tricker" is another debate altogether, but there should be no argument over what it is that you are doing.
edit: Unless you want to be some "MLMer" fag...
Random person: "What is that strange thing activity you are doing, kid in the park?"
Kid in the Park: "Can't you see? I'm "moving" ("multi level moving" to be more precise)."

Yeah its annoying, but what can you do. The name will be accepted soon enough.
My mother calls it "OMGthatlookspainfulareyouok?" in a very concerned and speedy voice.

The word maybe comes from "Tricks" in a sense that all of the techniques utilized in tricking are the stuff of movies and hence called tricks because they are the most advanced "Tricks" of multiple martial arts disciplines.
