View Full Version : Kicking help...........
Ok I'm having a bit of trouble telling the difference between pop and cheat kicks. I was outside just drilling kicks for a couple minutes and I realized I have no idea what kicks I'm doing really. Basically the best kick I can do is a kick with a 900 degree spin in the air with the kick on the last 360 degrees, and that was only once, and very sloppy. Now I always assumed the difference between the two is in the setup for the kick and not the amount of rotation in the air. Mostly because when I saw a cheat 720, it was only 540 degrees in the air. For a cheat kick is a rotation counted on the ground or something like that? Any help would be appreciated as this really is confusing me at the moment.
When comparing a cheat kick and a pop kick of the same name, the cheat kick is the same as the pop kick, except 180 degrees of the rotation are "spent" in the set up for the move. Cheat moves are from a one legged takeoff, and pop moves are from both legs.
Ok so for the kick I described as the best kick I could do, if I take off from 2 legs, what is it called?

Yes. Well said.
In simple note:
A cheat take off is off of one leg. Take the full rotation of the move (for example, cheat 720), and subtract 180 degrees to get the total rotation in mid air. In a cheat 720, 540 degrees is rotated in the air, but 180 is "cheated" on the ground in the takeoff. In the end, however, a full 720 degrees is rotated in the move, however 180 is done on the ground.
A pop takeoff is a takeoff that faces the target, and the preformer must spin the full rotation that the move qualifies as. For example, in pop 720 (often just called a '720'), 720 degrees must be spun in order to qualify the move as a '720'. In a pop takeoff, the takeoff is with both feet 'punching' off of the ground in a two footed jump fashion.
Both variations are good for learning. Cheat takeoff kicks are excellent for combos, and pop takeoff kicks are excellent for starting combos, learning control in spins, and just plain power.
However, things get technical when we hit pop tricks, with kicks like the 900. The rotation isn't 900 degrees, per se; the rotation is 720 degrees, but with a kick from your "outside leg" (the leg on your right if you spin counterclockwise, or the leg on your left if you spin clockwise). With you kick with the outside leg, add 180 degrees to your total rotation, and you will get the appropriate name of the kick you are performing.
Weird? Yes. However, it's just how it is.
Hmm interesting.... Say is a pop trick from a round-off viable? I just had a wacky idea that I'll try in a foam pit if I find time

Yes it is viable. I beileve Brandonn (sp? He has a roundoff full on the beach as his avatar) of these fourms does them often.
As an even simpler note:
Inside kicks are (a hook or 'outside' cresents are thrown):
360, 720, 1080, 1440.
Outside kicks are (Round kicks and 'inside' cresents (rarely) are thrown):
540, 900, 1260.
Thanks, I possibly might have just learned a couple new tricks.
