View Full Version : Whey Protein or Tuna after lifting?

Been lifting three times a week for the past 2 months now. Have a quick question about protein:

- After a workout, should I consume tuna or whey protein to get that much needed protein? Would really appreciate if someone could inform me of the pros and cons of each.

Also, when else during the day is it important to consume protein. I'm not concerned about getting huge, just want to ensure my body has enough protein to work on.

Thanks guys!

Some whey before/during workout will allow for faster recovery... But you should have protein afterwards aswell, with alot of carbs. I eat something rich on protein everythird hour, like tuna, chicken or special cottagecheese, or shakes.

Whey will get through your GI tract faster, but tuna is a good source of protein to use as well. It is important to consume protein throughout the day, but most especially within 15 minutes of finishing your workout--your muscles need it then the most. It is also a fine idea to consume some slow-digesting protein before bed. Casein types are a prime choice.

careful man, if you eat more than three forkfulls of tuna after your workout you MIGHT just wake up like ronnie coleman the next morning, so be teh careful!

tuna also comes with the added benefit of fish oils (always a good thing) and its pretty clean. I hate it when you come out of the shower in the gym only to have your foot caked in powder cause some retard tried to pour his protein straight from the tub to a shaker.

edit:it does stink though, which makes you stink.....? Decisions

Protein is one side, don't forget about the carbs. Either have some in your shaker right after the session or as Karl says, eat it afterwards. Carbs are essential after a heavy session since it is needed to refill your glycol depots.

No offence to the food lovers but I don't think I'd ever kickstart my protein synthesis with tuna right after working out, it would feel weird in a way.

Whey first, tuna later. Makes sense both due to digestion speed and accessibility.

Another good reason is because whey stimulates the protein synthesis AND spikes your insuline, whereas tuna gives some small stimulation. The amount of tuna you have to binge down is pretty large as well, there's not that much energy per 100g you know.

Since you have some powdered WHEY take it before and after your workout and save that tuna for the many snacks and meals throughout the day.

Simple? Easy? Fun? Yes!

drink 50 grams of whey, 25grams dextrose, 25 grams maltodextrin, couple grams of glutamine and creatine and some BCAA powder and you'll feel like you didn't even work out.

so in effect your post workout shake becomes your preworkout shake because you're instantly ready to go back to the gym.

Glutamine is a placebo.

I beat Rahf to it.

There's no point in mixing BCAA with whey, since whey contains BCAA already. The reason you ingest protein pre-workout is to activate the protein synthesis and prevent muscle breakdown by supplying them with amino acids. The carbs are there to refill your depleted glycogen.

Anfeyd beat me to it the bastard! Glutamine is placebo.

How much tuna do you need for the same protein amount as a scoop of whey roughly?

Rahf

One scoop of whey (depending on the purity of the protein) is around 20-25g of protein.

Also by eating tuna you can annoy vegans and tell them that when you open the can you can hear the fish scream . . . . . .
