Hey,

So I still can't really land any actual "tricks" on the ground yet (except the bkick), and after learning sideflips on a trampoline a month-ish ago, I figured I'd try some on the ground. So far, I find them alot easier than frontflips or backflips. I'm not sure if I am doing the sideflips right though, as in all of the attempts, to me, it looks like I kind of do something that looks more like a tucked doubleleg? I don't know.

I also tried some sideflips on the ground a few days ago. I filmed some, watched the technique, watched some tutorials, and then tried to use that to help the ones I filmed today. I think it helped I bit, as I can land on my feet just about everytime now. My landing is super low though (the slow motion one on the ground is probably my best one). I think I might need to delay the flip even more? Maybe block better?

Here are the clips: http://media.putfile.com/Sideflips-practice-7-12-07

Oh, and in the last clip, I think I landed like that because I was tired (it was last attempt).:dead:

Thanks.

You got to use your hands. Don't ask me how though, haha.

It looks like you got too used to the trampoline doing the work for you. When you jump, you're keeping your legs bent and losing out on some height. Punch the ground hard and extend your legs completely.

ah my specialty, Sideflips

You're neither jumping nor blocking properly

1. Jump with your legs extended (like Timmeh said)
2. Get a better block by putting your legs in front of you instead of simply behind of beneath you.
3. Take a better run up

I suggest watching dogen's Blocking/Sideflip tutorials @ www.dogentricks.com (http://trickstutorials.com/forum/www.dogentricks.com)

Watch my avatar can try to pick up the technique from there, I've also upload a normal sideflip for you as an example:

how does that work?

tucking just makes you rotate faster in the air :good:

I've heard of it too, I suppose it works in a sense, if you do your tuck at the correct time it spins you round while you're still getting height. But it only really applies to like, double backflips and more advanced moves.

Something like that anyway, I've seen it said many times, never seen REALLY good proof of it though.

yeah, i know what you mean, but think about it on a regular backtuck, if you start to tuck when you're going up, you'll get a v fast but low backtuck, hence why people who stall before they tuck get much higher.

i know what you mean though, but i dont think that tucking actually makes you get higher.

i think tucking can make you look like your higher, the tighter ball your in the higher up you look, so it's all sort of an illusion.

a correctly timed tuck does indeed add height, it's a bit more about the timing then the tuck but a crappy tuck doesn't help you whatsoever.

what is a correct sideflip tuck?

it's not the same thing as you'd think of a front/backflip tuck.
-a correct sideflip tuck can be described as a fling towards the air in a circular motion.

I think there's a couple of vids out there that describe the general tuck (I remember a german one with subtitles that was very good)

just keep practicing and don't worry too much about the specifics, you'll get it, optimizing is another story.

I also forgot to say: Good luck

I dont think there is tucking in any way will get you more height, the only way would not be how you tuck, but when you tuck.on a sideflip my tuck is grabbing my ass.

k, I didn't really want to make this into a very specific topic but since you asked...I'm gonna try and explain this.

The trick is in the first 45 degrees of the tuck, instead of simply tucking and holding like a normal sideflip, make it a priority to fling yourself out of this orbit into the air like this:
A normal Sideflip: http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/3776/nsideflipjq1.jpg

An optimized Sideflip: http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/1280/osideflipwr0.jpg

That's the theory behind it
If you're still with me we'll move onto practical application:

(even though it's a bitch to see I'll still use this as an example since it's still a good example of sideflip aimed at height)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc1X_TDvfi0
Notice how I reach the peak of my jump (just at the height of the mat but not over it) and propel myself by "yanking" my left leg in a circular motion up.

Some advanced application:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGYJyKk_v5w
Pay close attention to the first 45 degrees because that's actually a tuck where I use this same technique to get height, after that I extend the legs and initiate the spin.

I really hope that made some sense.

Nice post, I got some good info out of it haha. Might have to take another go at sideflips sometime soon. Your sidefull is crazy

about that whole 'proper tucking gets you higher', i don't know about sideflips, but it makes sense to me in backflips- try thinking of it this way- when you're in top height, you pull you legs to your chest, right? that's when you get a liiiittle extra height in my opinion... its kinda like you're pushing yourself higher with your legs... that's my theory... never actually looked at slow-mo videos to see if it's correct though, so don't take it too seriously ^^

I tried a few more sideflips today.

I focused on blocking better, delaying the flip, and straightening my legs/jumping better. It definitly helped alot (though they still need work), because now I don't land crouched over (well at least as not as much as before), and my hands don't touch the ground. Here are a few clips:

Thanks for the help so far.

EDIT: I'll put it on youtube too since putfile makes it all blurry and choppy.
