There is no better exercise for handsprings than doing handstand pushups with or without them against a wall right? Ab exercises are good too.

your shoulder muscles are really important. you can do pushups, except without using your elbows for the dip, use your shoulders. you will only go down 3 inches or so, but do a bunch of those.

hopefully you were talking about front handsprings.

The best exercise for handsprings is handsprings. They require no strength.

Yeah... I'm scrawny as hell and I can bhs just fine. Proper bhs don't require strength at all...

Practicing handsprings will strengthen the muscles needed to perform handsprings, and adjust your flexibility needed for handsprings as well.

Doing handsprings will, surprisingly, make you better, stronger, and faster at doing handsprings!

I can't do handsprings. Thats why I made this thread so I can learn some exercises that will build strength so I can actually attempt them properly since I dont have mats or a spotter.

you're... to weak to do a handspring?

Seriously?

you dont actually need... any real strength to do these :eh:

If you can do a handstand you're strong enough to handspring. If you cant support yourself doing a handstand then theres something really wrong with you!!

Wow. I said I want to have at least some good strength so I can make a GOOD ATTEMPT. Even if I fail, it will still be a good attempt. I dont want to get bad habits like bent legs that will be hard to get rid of in the future. I can do handstand for about 21 seconds against the wall, but I need alot of practise for balancing myself when doing a free handstand.

its got nothing to do with balance.

Seriously man you're overcomplicating it and trying to dig holes in everything. Just man the fuck up and go do some on grass NOW and stop being a pussy. Theres no real way you can hurt yourself doing them, and the only way you're going to get better is by PRACTISING.

Doing a bazillion handstand pushups and hitting the gym every day for 10 years wont make you do teh 1337 handspring first time, so dont get delusional about that.

I know but theres a tutorial I read that said "Pushing off with your arms will really help you flip over when doing handsprings. It also makes them look alot nicer". This is what the main point of this thread was related to. I should have posted it earlier.

.. I learned handsprings around 7 years of age at the park with some friends, I didn't have any pre-strength training or a good balancing time on handstands.
Learning to go from landing crouched to standing is part of the process, and you certainly don't need a mat or a spotter.

you should be able to military press at least twice your body weight for a good handspring

Ponytail means you can instantly do handsprings.

Go to an open gym and get coached there on your bhs if you're unwilling to try them on grass.

There arent any gyms that have open gym to non members in my city so Im gonna have to use the mats at school next year.

If you're concerned about the muscle mass you have in regard to handsprings, I'd suggest just doing a lot of handstands.

If you want good bhs like a gymnast, you need no strength, no real bending of arms, etc.

The tip I can best give you is this. Most people try to jump up as if doing a backflip and then touch down on the way over. No. Bhs is all about going backwards. You should travel almost your height in distance during a bhs (unless you do the bhs in one spot).

Jump back, not up, put straight arms down, get your legs over using abdominal contraction, land.

wouldnt it be ideal to work abs over arms then, cos arms arent important but abs makes it better

You're missing the point being made here. Everyone is saying bhs are more technique than strength, so worry less about the strength and start focusing on the technique.
