View Full Version : Who do you look to for your 'style' of tricking?
TKD_Andy

e.g Matt R looks to Luu, Grant (uk people will know him) with terada etc.
Who do you look to, and why? How far does it go aswell, do you try and replicate their trick style exactly or just use it as a basis?
*edit*
preferrably a single person, rather than a person for every trick, otherwise we'll be here all day!!

I go all over depending on the trick. Like I'm trying to learn Websters based off of petemanmans. But for Corks I'd like to be like Teddy.
Overall comboing tho, I'd eventually want to get like Morgan or Jono

i look up to different people for different moves i think. there's no single person that i try to emulate in every way i dont think.
a lot of my tricks are influenced by steve terada, hoai lei, chris devera, juji, hans and gary ip. i may try and emulate some of their moves but i usually end up with some sort of hybrid haha
eg the inspiration for hyper720 is a mixture of hoai and terada. terada pumps and spots his target and hoai does the actual hyper (yet spins without spotting his target).
edit: i forgot haime! he added to the whole hyper720/hypers in general thing
dave (the flow of combos)
anis (type of tricks i.e. dub cork and cork2cork2cork)

lol i thought i'd update it otherwise people would probably start listing every single trick and going through them dedicating them to individual people.
My personal influence is stephen renney. To me, EVERYTHING he does is just fawking incredible. Just his execution and perfection of technique inspires the shit out of me and theres nobody else that really does it as good as him.

Right now I'm still just trying to land moves more than incorporate style into them.

Jun-15-07, 10:07 AM
ben brown for the kicks
luu for the twists
izzi for the flipszz
and i wish i was more like sessh for creativity
but one person??
sammy vasquez
hm. in the past couple years, no one really.
I take technique from various people but don't try to imitate their style. Meaning I will try to take cork and tigerswipe (invert raiz) tech from anis. Grandmaster swipe tech from Juji and haime. Sideswipe tech from gary ip. and so on...Who ever imo has the best technique on a particular move is who I try to mimic what they are doing. Sharingan! (lol)
When I first started it was mostly Juji for me, mostly because he helped me a lot in the beginning with learning the basics. Then as I learned more I just kinda did what came natural. =P

i was not satisfied with my corks until they were as high as anis's. now that that has happened i don't look to anyone for style at all. i just do things how i want.

I used to look towards Luu for innovative style, but know it seems I've been getting more and more like David Douglas. I guess it's an unconscious thing for me, cause I don't recall having a memory of me deciding to incorporate more "Double D" type movements...it just kinda happens.
As many people have found out by now, I really don't have a set style. What I do is dependant on who is around for the most part [if there is a "corker", I'll Cork/Gainer more...if there is a "kicker", I'll kick more...when I'm alone, it's whatever].
I think I'm gonna start "biting" a couple of moves from Tim [User Name], cause I have some nice combos in my mind that uses his palatte of tricks.

I'm Asian.

Mainly Ben Brown, but also Gary Ip for pop techniques

Honestly I look towards none other than Jujimufu. Why is this? Because he has a clean, flawless technique for all his tricks, and makes them look like he's not even trying, and that he could bust out anything in his arsenal, anytime, anywhere. That's exactly what I want, and I haven't seen anyone else with his amount of effortless cleanliness.

I like the way Sessh uses mixes of aerial kicks in his tricking and not only tricks. Thats something i started to pick up recently :good: .

I first just try the move after I've seen a tutorial with the style I like (which varies every single time), after that I'll get the move and it'll probably look a lot different from the tutorial.
...after a while I'll stumble on someone that had my style or habbits when doing that move and I'll use that to improve.

CrazyAsian-his raiz s/t's and overall style

i'd say Steve, from Dave C and Steve's Act I, Act II, Act III, and The Epilouge. the way he flows from trick to trick, showing that the trick has effort behind it, yet can be done smoothely is also reflected in my tricking. i just wish i was as good at twists. for roundoff i'd say Dave C because they float, have amazing style, yet differentiate themselves. thank god for the Acts!

Without a doubt, Waterboy. He was there when I first started tricking, and I CONSTANTLY reference his old stuff and videos to learn from.
A great guy, a great trickster, and tricks to clean it smells like lemons.

Dude that's not the point. Obviously if you've been going after that style for years and years it'd be more evident but most of us are looking at what we'd like to look like eventually, even if we aren't anywhere near there yet. Am I even close to looking like Ben Brown or Anthony Atkins? No, but that doesn't mean I don't want my style to be influenced largely by theirs as I get better.
This isn't a "what trickster do you trick like" thread. It's about what you want in time.

My biggest inspirations are Jujimufu, Dave C and shengoikee. In the beginning of my tricking 'career' I mostly looked at juji and was inspired by his samplers and clean technique, so I studied those a lot. Still to this day I think juji is one of the coolest and cleanest tricksters ever. I like how (it seems) he strives for perfection in his trick execution, and only puts his best tricks in his samplers, even though he can do more than he shows to the world. Also, he does a lot of my favorite tricks (aerial genre, hyperswipe king etc).
As I became more involved in the tricking community I found a lot more people to look up to, and I've been really motivated since Dave C's 'Act' videos, because of the dedication shown. I love Dave's style (and the hair adds to it haha). One thing I'd like, is to combo as well as Dave C can. This year is the first time I actually started working more seriously on combo's, and it's very hard for me... but I'll get there in time :pirate:
And there's just something about shengoikee that I really like, he's like an RPG character that is maxing out in the kicks department - I like how it's his primary focus. It's not the same as me, but it is inspiring! Same with Haime, I really look up to him and I want his kicks haha.
Yes! :cyclops:

for me I look to Shido and Starfoot. Simply because they do more kicks and just have two very different styles that still portrays the samething. Not saying that they're the same, cause they're very different, it's just the martial arts flow from them that influences me a lot. The very powerful, very smooth, art flow coming from them.
e.g Matt R looks to Luu, Grant (uk people will know him) with terada etc.
I didn't try to like emulate Terada's style, coz alotta people say our moves are alike, I just learnt most of my moves from his videos and was taught some things by Steve also so it just sorta happened really.
I was also a really big fan of Alvin Kash (Still is the best kicker in my opinion) and Jerico Catura is awesome aswell!
Sessh with a pinch of Flow.

I started to be a real Manny Brown fan lately...I dig his misslegs and advanced techniques..it's like he's re inventing tricking or something haha...I've been trying to get some misslegs and that kind, but I suck big time at it, so it will take a while lol...
I'm also a big Steve Terada fan ^_^. I love his style :P.
And let's not forget about Kjer either. I love his speed combined with style tricks ^^.
But ofc...I'm no way near those guys haha
Let's all say Sessh!
The ones with best style in my point of view, is Crazy asian, Scalco and Sesshoumaru.
My favorite is undoubtedly Crazy asian.

I was just in the middle of make a video and i realised that i'm a lot like Juji and yourself Jan. Juji, to me, seems to focus a LOT on his basic tricks as the corner stone of his skill (which a lot of people don't seem to do today) and more recently i've been doing a lot more technical variations of my basic moves which was inspired by you.
Hahaha, first time I've heard I'm an inspiration to someone:) Warms my heart anyways man:) Thanks:)

Haha yeah you're right but it's like a conversation between a group of people: A person within the group wont commonly be referred to in the 3rd person and recognized for their skills purely because they're present. So you being here means you wont be mentioned as much as you might have been.
Are you talking about the sampler you've supposedly been training for for years?

More like the sampler that never got edited. It was supposed to be released August last year, and .... well... it never happened.

Who do you look to for your 'style' of tricking?i want to be explosive, fast, and powerful like kyle mclean, sammy vasquez, sesshoumaru. i want to be innovative and make people go "wtf" as often as possible. I also admittedly want to try to model my tumbling after crazy asians.
