After fighting the fear, I finally got the balls to attempt these buggers. Advice and help would be appreciated. Keep in mind that my arms were pretty sore from yesterday so I know they arent as good as they could be. How do I keep my legs straight? No matter how hard I try, they always turn out bent.

You have to jump up more, and keep your arms straight. Like a nice arch.

Go up into a hand stand then fall back down to your feet, one leg at a time. Now do a bhs and fall out of it the same way. Thats gay though so you probably want to land on two feet at once. To do this, keep your arms straight when you land on them and push off using your shoulder muscles. this will get you high enough. Then all that is left is to pike and use your stomach to pull your legs around. Oh yeah and try just going up into a hand stand then pushing off with your shoulders and piking down to your feet. Thats a good way to get used to the motion.

Nice bhs :) Try to jump more and push more with your arms.

It looks like your arms arent supporting your weight as well as they could be, maybe its because theyre tired? But try to keep them straigher.

It looks like youre pretty much there, I would take away the makeshift mat.

Yeah they were pretty tired and they are tried again today so Im going to take a day break from the handsprings untill they are back with their full strength. I think Ill take away the mat as soon as I can make my arms straighter.

Your body just isn't used to this. As you get stronger they will get better.

1. If you're trying to get your feet to land on the mat you'll never get a good bhs.
2. The bhs movement is different to what you're doing. You're sort of 3/4 of the way round when your feet come off the floor, you ned to jump off the floor earlier, and make sure your jumping backwards.

The tutorials I looked at told me to jump off my legs right after I swing my upperbody and arms backwards. Am I supposed to jump at the same time I swing my body and arms?

you're problem is as simple as pie : you just don't jump! a BHS shouldn't go just back. there should be a strong jump going both upwards and back. you don't have to focus and concentrate so much in the whole "going backwards" concept. just pull hard with your shoulders and that should flip you over. and as for the "bent legs" thing, it's again because you don't jump. after you dip you just go into the handsring. with a proper jump, your legs go from a bent position to a straight position. and as you do not jump, your legs just stay bent all the way through ^_^ in conclusion- JUMP AWAY!! JUMP AWAY!! JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP JUMP AWAY!!!

You are not doing a good job jumping back. When you are sitting keep your chest back! If you stop right before you start to jump, you should fall backwards. Think about sitting into an invisible chair. You won't even have to think about the direction of the jump at all. It will go back on its own. If you go to a gym or anything a good drill is to set up some nice fluffy mats waist high. Stand a foot or two in front of the mats and jump backwards(landing on your back) as FAR as you can.

in BHS's your body should stay pretty much straight and rigid throughout the whole move

There arent any gyms that I can go to but Ill try those tips. Thanks.

Btw those mats you set up are only making you worse.
The only thing I see them doing is stopping you from getting grassy knees/hands.
They're not needed and if you're trying to get your feet to land on the mat you're bhs will look bad, and if you're not trying to get your feet to land on them then that makes the mat extremely useless unless your wrists are weak and need the extra cushioning.

It might help removing the mats.
And as I say, watching the tutorial won't make you land it, you need to apply the tips in the tutorial to your bhs.
(this is basically the same as what everyone is doing by giving you the same tips shown in the tutorial)

I think I might skip the backhandsprings and learn backtucks first so I dont get any bad habits. I want to learn backtucks first anyways.
