View Full Version : Avatars
Why don't you just disable uploaded avatars and make them offsite only?

I wish that worked! You can upload one from an off site source in the "edit your avatar" dialogue by inputing an external URL, but it ultimately stores it in the database.
Sucks! :ogre:

Yea that's exactly what I was thinking, hmmm. That stinks, you'd think vBulletin in all it's greatness would allow you to link offsite avatars as well.
Hey Juji, you may want to look into this:

That's for vbulletin 2.0 which is 5 years old now. I'm looking into another possible solution by disabling avatar viewing for guests. Since usually there is a 1:5 ratio of registered users online to guests; This could reduce the traffic substantially.

Oh eff that then haha. I should probably keep up to date on my vbulletin versions.
Yea your idea's better. :tea:
Personally I like the new change. Animated GIFS can grow old, and in this case it's worth having a larger image as the tradeoff.

There really was no reason we shouldn't of had larger dimension images as avatars to begin with, I was just being a jackass and left 100x100 as the maximum amount. I'll figure out the maximum image dimensions before it begins stretching the postbit template later and change it to that for extra increase.
Stretchage reserved only for special people though, as it already is. :popsicle: :good:

Because of all the cool avatars I made, I dont really like it if people who have been on these forums for a while can't use the avatars. But if I didnt make avatars I would like the change.

Oh well... I guess worse things could happen.
Stop crying about the animated gifs!

I like animated avvys as much as the next guy, but we all have to make sacrifices... for the greater good.
edit: I meant to ask, do picture threads such as "Pictures that are actually funny" suck up bandwidth too or does it not matter because the pics are hosted offsite?

juji does this help?
5. Move Avatars and Profile Pics to the File System
As with the Attachments above, but the Avatars are on every post, so cause a burden to the server whenever a post is viewed.
To move them to the filesystem, chmod your forums/customavatars and forums/customprofilepics directories to 777.
Go to the AdminCP and expand the Avatars menu.
Click User Picture Storage Type.
Choose to Move Avatars and Profile Pics to the File System.
Avatar Path: /home/*username*/public_html/forums/customavatars
Avatar URL: /forums/customavatars
Profile Pic Path: /home/*username*/public_html/forums/customprofilepics
Profile Pic URL: /forums/customprofilepics

I was trying to figure out why all the avatars were gone, then I read this:

And realized that I wasn't logged in. xD

When you use [ img ] [ /img ] it does not use bandwidth no. Your picture thread is a-okay! And I've spent many dozens o' minutes laughing my ass off at some of the things in it. :good:
juji does this help?
YES IT DOES! Thanks a lot man! His original post had other things in it I should try as well. In the end many of these things won't only save bandwidth they'll speed up the forums considerably.

Yes it was easier than I thought to apply. Just a few characters added to two templates and voila. I think this might be what works the best for the issue.
THANKS SO FAR EVERYONE!

So you can use urls and the [IMG] things for gif avatars or just pictures?

No problems, with the number 5 wouldn't it make it possible to use a different server to host avatars? if so then you can get free servers to use that restrict file size to 1mb and have no mysql etc. They are normaly shit for hosting a decent site on but would be ideal for avatar storage, the file size limits and restrictions wouldn't matter for small images.
Also if that server got bandwidthised the avatars would go down but not the forum.

I'm not sure if sites can manipulate the files on servers which they aren't hosted on.
Like, I know you can't transfer postdata from one site to another site on another server. I'm sure there could be a way but it would be even more complicated to get the forums software to link to that avatar after it's been hosted off site with some special specialness.
Unless I'm totally wrong and you can just click and upload files to another server, but I honestly doubt that's the case. I actually hope I'm wrong in this case though lol.
jeez you people know a lot about vbulletin!

Using flash, and traceBitMap, you can minimize a file size to keep an animated GIF under 8kb...
I've done it :D Maximum number of frames for "decent" quality is around 12~ But depending on how much detail is needed, more frames can be added.
<< current avatar is only 6.79kb

poor frame rate makes animated gifs look pants. My previous gifs were all about 60 frames long, 117kb and 100x100

Hey no fair how come everyone else is getting frikkin huge avatars as well. They should only get moderately sized ones, as a sign of subjection!

Hmm, I seem to recall when I got my big avatar that the conversation went something like...
Dave C: Yo Juji hook me up with a bigass avatar
Juji: OK, JUST SEND IT TO ME
Dave C: How big can it be?
Juji: AS BIG AS YOU WANT IT!
just thought that was notable
