I know this might need a kinda complex answer, but i want to maximize my gains as much as possible so i'm askin:juji:.

How much time should we wait or rest in between sets of weightlifting exercises?( and bodyweight exercises? )

lol, u dont live in sharjah do u? oh n it depends, go here http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Tidbits.html
n look at Strength Recovery. isolation exercise may not require as much rest as a complex motion but its not that black n white. if ur purpose is hypertrophy(size) u prolly wont need to rest more than 2 minutes and in many cases 1 minute should b sufficient. that said its always good to vary things in ur training so switch around and c how it feels. gdluck

What do you want to maximise your gains of?

I find that a high volume density (so, short rests) is important for gaining muscle, but not as important as total volume. Longer rests of 5 minutes or so are less fatiguing and allow a higher total volume and heavier weights than short rests. Use a range of rest periods.

In my experience, if your goal is muscle growth, you should begin your next set in 60 seconds or less.

Also, if you are training for maximal strength, it would be okay to rest for 3 minutes, but definitely not for 5 minutes in my personal experience with this, because it gives your muscle too much time to get cold and also you start thinking way too much and getting lazy (psychologically and physically).

Rest until you're ready to lift the next set. If it takes longer than 3 conscious minutes, you're a wuzz.

Actually, I aint a pro weightlifter meaning that i dont lift at the gym. I do what I can at home with my modest capabilities. So you see, i dont do "heavy lifting".
For what i'm doin currently, i feel that 20 secs to 60 secs are way enough as rest periods. I just wanted to know whats best, officially.
Its gnna be a while before i'll need 3 minute rest periods.

Ps......
lol, u dont live in sharjah do u?

Unfortunately I do:eh:. Why'd u ask?

I don't even keep track of that crap, so it obviously fluctuates all the time. I just go when I feel my body is ready again, whether it's a minute or 3 minutes or whatever. Don't bother timing yourself or anything idiot!

I used to rest for about 4-5 minutes between sets when doing serious strength/power training.

A valid excuse to have longer rests.

You are excused Compleks. Does it feel better now? Need a man-hug as well?

Yes, with lots of manly pats on the back, and atleast one arm between out bodies as to not get too close.

If you were to minimize rest time between sets, would that maximize your gains? Or would it be harmful?

It would help your endurance, but would probably mean you'll fatigue before the end of the set.
