View Full Version : Am I too old to start tricking?

Hey,
I've been doing martial arts for about 15 years now, and I would love to take this to the next level.
The catch is, I am starting to get on a bit now. I'm 27 and I don't know if I should even risk tricking.
I'm pretty flexible, and my fitness is reasonable... but am I starting to get past it or should I just go for it and damage myself???
Thanks,
Si

You might be too old, some people will be well past it by then. Or you might still be very able to learn some tricks and progress. So try it and see.

Ah well, can't blame you for not releasing footage of your girlfriend on the Internet (in the Publicus no less). I say you splice some footage of that video into your next tricking sampler, enough to earn a pat on the back from TT, but not enough to be able to make out her identity :good:

Just be careful of your ankles. I think it's the only thing you'll have to worry about...that and looking rediculous to your neighbors. A 17 year old tricking in their parent's backyard is one thing, a 27 year old tricking in their own backyard is another, lol.
But seriously, ankles. I've also been doing martial arts for 15 years, and nothing has strained my ankles as much as tricking. Missing the landing for a multiple spin kick SUCKS! I suggest warming up very well, rotate your ankles thoroughly, and take it slow.

I've not read but maybe.. 4 posts in this thread.. but..
Anyways.. I'm 27, well as of this past week, and can tell you that 27 is in no way shape or form old. Period. I still feel as "young" as I did when I was 17.
If there is one thing I know I have lost over the past few say, 5 years, is will to push from a dead stop. Example:
Haven't worked out in a few months because of laziness or attention to other things. Aw man, I'll work out tomorrow.
See? I'm sure everyone on the face of the earth gets that occasionally, I've just noticed it's harder to just DO IT, when I've been in a slump. With "age" that is.
Past few weeks though, I've had the eternal fire burning inside and am pushing things once again.
So, if you have to ask is 27 too old... you need to start making CONSCIOUS EFFORTS every day and night to train. Somedays you may need to go against your "will" and force a stretch session or something, anything that involves getting faster/stronger.
Anyways.. first post since joining. Heya all! :juji:
SiMonsterD
Jul-20-07, 03:57 PM
I train a fair bit anyway - at least twice a week on the MA plus extras.
I went and had a bit of a tumble yesterday afternoon in the field by my house. Out of view, of course. I didn't try anything fancy, but practiced what I can do more and more to develop my speed and strength. I've got myself a spotter now, so I am going to start on doing the basics next week.

But probably too stiff and/or lardish to do so.
Speaking of lard... I see fat folks every damn day... I co own a Goin' Postal and see many customers, most of which are seriously out of shape. Anyways.. the other day when out riding the Buell, I see this girl, probaly in her mid 20s, and she already had a truck tire for a midsection. Granted I see fat people alot, but I actually got sick feeling. I suppose because of seeing how lazy people can get when out of highschool and not having to go to gym class, or atlease participate in some kind of physical activity.. it got me sick feeling at how pathetic people can be. Another good point is that I'm the only person in this thread (besides Dave C and Swartz) who's been a moderator, and when I was, I created a forum to stop redundant questions like the one asked in this thread, only to have it utterly glossed over by self-righteous pricks with 11 posts telling me how I ought to behave myself.

Yes, you would actually have to have the mind of an infant to be "scared" away from tricks by some message board posts, ha ha.
I wouldn't like to be associated with a bunch of immature assholes when I say I'm a tricker/trickster. This isn't really a concern at the time (yet).
And it sure as hell might scare someone away from the community, even if not from tricks completely. That alone would suck ass for both the newbie trickster (who would feel rather alone and helpless with tricking) and the community would loose a (future) contributing member. So shut it, or think about what you're saying.
Another good point is that I'm the only person in this thread (besides Dave C and Swartz) who's been a moderator, and when I was, I created a forum to stop redundant questions like the one asked in this thread, only to have it utterly glossed over by self-righteous pricks with 11 posts telling me how I ought to behave myself.
... who's been a moderator on this particular forum. Jackass mods are the worst of all the internet. Good moderators, on good forums, remain relatively passive, don't partake on flaming nor in touchy subjects, so as to have an impartial persona. OFC, the TT forums really suck ass, so huh...
Q: "BOOHOO you little girl you can leave if you want."
A: Yeah, I can, but I choose not to, as even thou there are way too many assholes in here, there is a minority of good and smart people as well, who have been giving me tips and advicing me and generally made me feel not-so-lonely-a-trickster in the world.
As for the problem of the "redundant questions"... That is why you have forum rules. Someone doesn't read them, breaks them, gets a temp ban and a warning slash whatnot. He doesn't need to be flamed and torn apart. Granted, the question of age is a rather common and agitating one... so make a rule about it. Put up a sticky. Flaming and calling names is just stupid, pointless and immature.

No, I am not put off. I don't get put off by people like this that churn out the same crap day in, day out. They piss me off. And unless it comes with a coherant arguement, I dismiss it anyway.
I did a little bit of tricking at TKD last night. One of the other guys there is in to it, although most of the class is scared to give it a go. Its more a traditional sports sparring type class so I am trying to get them to try more dynamic kicking and such...
No disorders, pretty strong, flexible... Just want to give it a go and get some more speed and turns going. Tricking always looked fun, just dont know why I never tried before...
I kinda want to delete the thread, just because of the contents, not the original question.
Try tricking! Ashley Beck's dad did fulltwists a few years back, and he's ... I don't know, 50?

When I was taking Aikido in Wilmington, NC, my instructor swore by MSM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylsulfonylmethane) for his former knee problem. I never got around to really researching it though... but there's a link with some information on it. As I understand per my old instructor, his knees were at one time, super tight and always had pain when practicing Aikido, he claimed MSM got rid of the pain and whatnot. He seemed like a honest man, so who knows =]
So, if you "feel like you may be too old" to start tricking, free running, or anything that's strenuous and have some stiff joints, that might help, but I'd do some hard research first.
Haha my Taekwondo instructor sold glucosamine chondroitin at his dojang also

Tricking is fairly useless, really. You can't make any good money off of it, unless you go into TV and advertising (which is hard).
I trick, but I focus on my guitar playing and school. I want to start competing in powerlifting in my later years, so I've gotten more into that as well. Tricking is cool and all, but all I CAN use it for is doing stunts on stage while riffing choruses.

I do not think age should be an important factor but you may want to consult your parents before beginning tricks, rock_ten. The stresses of gymnastics can have deteriorating effects on the growth plates over time and I would not recommend doing any strenuous gymnastics until you are older.

You should stick with the 1000lbs deadlifts for now, they are much safer than kipups and au batidos.

Not necessarily true... this was a thread to get different perspectives towards the hobby regarding age. if everyone had come back saying, "Risky, mate... I wouldn't give it a go at your age." I would have listened. The fact is that I got a great deal of mixed opinion and some quite chauvenistic (sp?) and downright rude and inconiderate. Those i ruled out. the ones I listened to were the ones that had something contructive to say.
I've been on a fair few forums in my time, and this type of thing is so bloody common you have to take most of the responses with a pinch of salt.
I'm glad I sumbitted this thread... it also helps me work out which members are complete wankers and which ones arn't without doing a great deal of searches...

My school is also heavily into sport TKD and hardly anybody wants to even try. I did a random kip up one day and everyone was like freaking out about it and I was like, wtf? not hard. It gets frustrating being the only one, and my progression has suffered A LOT because of it. That has got to be the biggest obstacle to older tricksters, finding someone to learn with. Sure there are a lot tricksters in their mid to late 20's, but they usually have years of training under their belts that started in their teens if not earlier. It's completely different starting at 27 than continuing at 27. If you can convert that other guy at your school who was kind of interested, and get him to trick with you things are going to be SO much easier.
I'd be worried to suggest it if you had no MA or acrobatic background, but with 15 years of tkd under your belt you should at least learn how to do some sick spinning kicks if not any gymnastics
Also, I totally agree with you Madyson, trickers are so damn few and far between. No one in my high school ever heard of tricking until my senior year when I found a video (Team Ryouko's Friday Night Madness Open your eyes) and showed it to two of my best friends. Since then (3 years) we've been the only people who have ever actually heard of it and continuously trained since a year or two ago. I've just started to find out there are NJ trickers scattered around southern jersey and parts of New York, but no one is in my immediate area and it pisses me off considering how packed this state is. You'd think there would be more but if you consider how awesome and amazing this is, you have to be a pretty special person to not only find this worth perusing but actually make it your life! Hell, I'd say everyone on this forum should give themselves a big pat on the back, we really are pretty special when you consider how few of us there are in the populous XD

Kou you are the ultimate thread bumper.
Haha, at age 27 he has the capability of being stronger, faster and overall more athletic than if he was 20.
Huh? Do you mean the capability to be stronger than he was 7 years ago, or more capability for improvement? I'd agree with the former but not the latter.

Hm, isn't it better to be alive and regretting than die happy? If we remain alive and fight the fight against what makes it 'too late' for people, then some day there will be time to do what we love.
Of course it is better to live and spend your entire life thinking "what if I did this... What if I only did blahblahblah"... no.
I'd rather try my best to become a decent weightlifter, and try my best at becoming a well paid musician, than just rot at home, thinking "what if".

It is indeed good to take measured risks, but only because they are good and improve your chances of survival (which strength can in relation to physical risks) not because you want to do it before its 'too late'. The idea should be to fight the 'too late' all the while doing the things you like, and to like them because they combat the 'too late'.

I wouldn't listen to any lifestyle philosophy from Ashtar.

It's good advice not to listen to people who haven't actually put their theories into practise, I agree.
"Unless it poses a real, physical threat to your daily life, fuck it."
Great.
put simply: "whatever doesn't kill you makes your stronger"
we're all trickers here or at least try our asses off to be, right? well then I can safely assume that all of us have the basic undeniable mentality to realize our lives and opportunities are limited and that if we want to make something out of it, we damn well better do it! Of course no one here wants to die and eliminate the possibility of doing more with your life before it ends oh so soon, but we also are a people who are willing to take a little risk just to see what these babies can do! (our bodies)
I don't know about you or anyone else, but the one thing that got me through to doing my first backflip on the ground outside was convincing myself that it was worth it. Though looking at the blue pill in one hand, I knew pain may be imminent and that if I screw up I will most certainly injure myself or worse so I might as well not try. But looking on the other hand for the red pill, I realize that I've trained hard, learned what I needed to do, that any screw up at this point can only be blamed on my fear and lack of concentration, and that this would be the beginning to actually DOING something amazing that few are able to even imagine themselves doing. Here I am, nothing at all special in your presence, but special in the eyes of the general public, different from the many who took the blue pill, and the self satisfaction that I took that leap and made it! It's always that first one the sets you up and makes you realize you CAN do anything.
