View Full Version : Parachute Sprints

For anyone living in Canada, perhaps you've seen the commercials (I think Nike) talking about preparing for hockey in the off season. It had a lot of interesting fitness stuff (like stick handling standing on 1 leg on that weird half bosu ball thing).
One of the things I saw was guys sprinting with parachutes tied to them. They open up and the big surface area increases their profile so there's a lot of air resistance to their running.
It seems pretty interesting. It's different than something like weighted sled dragging. They could probably even be used in combination. A good alternative if you're running on somewhere where you don't want a sled tearing up the ground, or if you just can't find more weight. It just looks really cool.

A couple of the best track athletes used parachutes back when I was in high school. It does look pretty cool if you're a fucking beast, otherwise not.

Thank you for the observational commentary, Tyciol.

Treadmills are cardio. Mine is 20kph at full power. I can keep up with that for 2 full minutes before i collapse.
20kph would carry you 10,000m in half an hour. The world record is 26:22.
Forget tricking, do long distance in the olympics. Alternatively go somewhere else with a better treadmill.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying LMS. They do this for power/speed/explosiveness. I'm sure it taxes the cardiovascular system but it's probably more anaerobic.
Parachutes don't work on the treadmill (does the plane take off?) and basically, the parachute lets you get stronger without putting you at more dangerous velocities.
Treadmills in general actually can circle at a much faster rate than you'd be able to run on real land since there's no air resistance to slow you down. They let you have a more upright profile too. That's why it's in general better to do treadmill running on the max incline possible, just to simulate running on a level plane, much less uphill.

Parachutes are fucking ridiculous. A fucking gimmic. It alters your mechanics

Man you talk alot of shit.
Actually, Ashtar's last post is completely correct. Because there is no wind factor when running on a treadmill, all you really have to do is move your legs fast enough to keep up with the circling tread. I have many friends who claim to run 10 miles at 10mph (treadmill setting), which would be 6 minute miles, whereas in real life I know for a fact that they couldn't do that if they had rollerblades on.

1) im sure that what i posted should have ended up in another thread, not here.... i was pointing out that someone who said they could run for half an hour on the highest setting of their treadmill must have been takling crap.
So thats probably why you couldnt understand why i posted anything lol.
2) ive read (probably on here) that it is good practice to set the treadmill to an incline of +1 degrees. This makes you have to work harder (m.g.s.sin(1) joules) simulating the effect of air resistance.
3) Yes of course a parachute would not work on a treadmill.
4) I think that the parachute running would be a good idea, just as squats are good for imprving jumping. Adding extra resistance. Yes the mechanics are different, but that only means that parachute-running can only be used as a supplement to normal training. perhaps as a novelty.
5) I dont expect parachute sales to increase of a result of this.
Hooooooow about sprints with a bungee cord strapped to you, like those games at carnivals where you need to run down a corridor and reach a goal before the bungee snaps you back? I imagine you'd get a nice burn in the anus after doing that for a while.
I parachute train on my treadmill all the time. Super valuable asset to my training.

Haha. Yes. What the hell do treadmills have to do with this thread?

Correct. That's why, if they're used at all, they're used in a very limited capacity and only at certain times in the training cycle.

I put a huge fan in front of the treadmill while i wear my parachute and set the treadmill to a 45 degree incline at 15 mph. FEEL THE BURN!
I seriously do like sleds sometimes tho and agree parachutes just make you look really cool if you're jacked and sprinting down a football field. I prefer a sled on concrete or something similar to that.

wouldn't it be dangerous to run with a parachute strapped to you? what if the wind picks up and you get tossed into a wall or something?

goddammit. though it would be fun if possible, the wind wouldn't suddenly pick up that hard.

There aren't usually walls in fields.

I can now say lol without exaggerating.
Just push a truck or something

Then you cant practice the arm movements, altering your mechanics some more.
Running up steep hills is good though.

You're stupid then. Just keep your hand on one wall and you're guaranteed to get out eventually.

Parachutes are fucking ridiculous. A fucking gimmic. It alters your mechanicsSo does running on different terrain, different inclines, dragging a sled, carrying a person... no one's saying make it replace running to make you a better runner. It's supplementary, like how lastmanstanding said, like how people add squats for jumping.
Man you talk alot of shit.True Lies.
Hooooooow about sprints with a bungee cord strapped to you, like those games at carnivals where you need to run down a corridor and reach a goal before the bungee snaps you back? I imagine you'd get a nice burn in the anus after doing that for a while.I've seen some videos like this. It seems like a pain to set up though, and going back each time would be annoying and kind of dangerous.
wouldn't it be dangerous to run with a parachute strapped to you? what if the wind picks up and you get tossed into a wall or something? No walls in large fields. I never thought of this though, it's something you don't get dragging a sled, variable resistance in weird directions on windy days.
What kind of fields do you run in?

In this case no wind would hit the parachute. Unless it was some kind of weird reverse curving updraft that blue down and then curved under the parachute and lifted you into the air and then your shoe gets snagged on a thorny minotaur wall and you lose the leg.
