So lets say like, your at the computer, and you just get down and do 20 push ups. Then you go downstairs or wherever to your kitchen to eat some food, watch a program, go upstairs and decide to bust out a few chin ups before you go to the bathroom.

Does this kind of random training actually help? or cause more harm than good?

How would it cause any harm?

You'll likely never see results doing so little training, probably, but yeah it helps.

yes it helps. proper training gets results sooner.

if you do random training AND proper training, most of your benefits are likely to be from the proper training.

You are unlikely to work up a great sweat maxing out on pressups during your ordinary day as you described. That should illustrate the difference in the effectiveness of each type of training.

I don't do this myself, I was just wondering if it was effective in any way, thanks for the info though =]

haha good question, I've often wondered myself as well.

Like I'll eat a piece of cake then feel bad and do as many pushups as I can to try and make up for the added fat.

It doesn't quite work that way.

Compensating for something you've eaten is the first step to an eating disorder and compulsive eating behaviour.

Random training is good for you s long as it isn't heavy activity performed while completely cold. In the long run you'll be better off having a serious plan and sticking with it.

This is definitely good for people trying to lose some weight. It helps you burn a few more calories; that's about it. I recommend in your free time such as when your watching a television show you do some relaxed stretching. I believe this will have better results then doing some random crap.

ive found random training is great for certain bodyweight feats/exercises which you cannot do yet. a long time ago I could do only 1 onearm pushup, through randomly doing them i got up to twenty on each arm in like 2 weeks, the same happened for muscleup. at first i couldnt do them at all. then everytime i passed a high bar in school i gave it a shot. 2 days later i could do 2 muscleups.

Doing random light shit is fine, and you'll most likely improve to a certain extent with some things, so long as you don't go to hard on them.

You could make your random training less random and plan to do things throughout the day, and record it. Read about Pavel's "grease the groove" idea, this article (http://www.dragondoor.com/articler/mode3/69/) seems to talk about it. You can spread out your trainined over the course of the day, that's fine. Doing a set of pullups or whatever with about half your max reps, or less, many times during the day, should see you increase your pullup numbers when you come to test them. Just stay fresh and don't make the sets at all tiring.

Greasing the groove for bodyweight feats is an excellent way to progress.
