View Full Version : Popping Hip

Lately I've found that when practicing any type of high kick (right leg only) the right side of my hip, sort of in the frontal area, pops as if being dislocated. It's not putting me in any pain, but it does concern me because I have already had to have a knee operated on for ignoring popping there, and I don't want to make the situation any worse.
Have any of you - especially martial artists - ever had anything similar to this?
Loads have it, me included. If it does not hurt it should be fine. If you are really concerned you should see a physio or get an x-ray.

Both my hips pop.
It's a great party trick.

Well I guess I can put up with it. Do you have any idea what may cause it so I can prevent it from happening on my left side?

Lucky you... I have this with both hips and shoulders. It doesn't stop me doing the kicking though.
(Although the shoulder did get wrenched out of it's socket whilst grappling a short while ago.. but that's besides the point)

This is one of the reasons I had to stop tricking. It's called snapping-hip syndrome and is pretty common. There are two solutions, strengthening the muscles around the hip or surgery.
You're lucky that it's painfree. Mine makes me cry like a baby and keeps me from walking for a few days afterwards.

This is no professional opinion, but...
When I was in my teens, I would get "popping" in joints aswell. I often wonder if it was because I still had some growing going on around that time of kicking and whatnot.
These days, I can be completely cold and jump kick a doorway top at random and the only "thing" I get is "OH GOD STRETCH NEXT TIME!". With side kicks, crescent kicks and the like, that require hip flexibility and strength I used to get occasional popping when I was in my teens, but even when being "inactive" for a good 2 years, I still never got it once past 21-22. Who knows, I don't really believe in coincidence, so I lean towards my body still growing... but I'm probably wrong =]
when i do really heavy weighted sit ups my hip pops, is that bad or does it not matter.
Yes, basically everyone who does kicking experiences this at some point. It's possible that you aren't doing some of your kicks (like inside crescent or axe kick) in quite the way they were meant to be done, in an attempt to slow them down or something. After lifting weights, the hip popping never happened to me again.

I guess I'll have to start hitting the gym more often. Squats and deadlifts good? Or do you have some other recommendation?
Actually what caused it to stop popping was probably insane trauma to my hips over the years combined with the fact that I barely do inside crescent kicks anymore

Oh.. well I have to do crescent kicks. Alot of them. But I will try lifting weights. If that doesn't work after awhile I will try the "insane trauma" route. Will jumping off my house suffice?
