You should learn to set/block properly . When you do a round-off , you should snap your toes down infront of your hips , this willl force you to go up , if you don't throw a trick out of it [tuck , layout, flash] you should feel off balance when you rebound .
When you do set ... it should feel like a stretch jump , with your body close to fully extended before you start to tuck/flip .
Also , your arms are a mess , they should stay by your ears [or close to your head] the whole time , this will help you have a higher set .
Be sure you rebound of your toes when coming out of your round-off , this will give you more push rather than when you rebound flat footed .
Good Luck .

Make your skip just before you roundoff long low and powerful.
When you reach, try to keep your hands close together and rounded all the way around to torque your body.
Really lift the first leg and don't let them trail behind.

When im going for height out of a round off, i get a fast run in, and as i go into the roundoff i try to reach out as far as i can so i cover a large distance with the round off.

Your hands should only touch the floor for a split second , push off the floor as fast as possible to generate more power/height .

Bending can work, straight works best.
Especially if you're a newbie, don't practice bending your arms. Keep them as straight as they naturally stay.

hes talking round off back tuck. not round off back hand spring back tuck.

It doesn't matter you fool the principles are the same.
Heck, if you were doing a roundoff > backhandspring you would want to bend your arms even more.

well back handspring back flip generates more power that round off if you do it right. but if you bend your arms on the round off you can get higher. (you push your self up hard and then snap your arms down

Since you obviously couldn't read my link, bending your arms in a backhandspring decreases the angle you can block at as well as keeps your momentum from continuously flowing out of the run and thus you get less momentum and less block which means less height.
Just because you push yourself out of a roundoff doesn't mean you're magically going to go higher.

Neither.
Just learn to cartwheel well. Then learn to roundoff well.

and straight arms work for olympic level gymnasts...

ok so both of them work good

but straight works better...
Well, as soon as (literally as soon as) I started bending my arms and totally blocking my roundoffs, I got more height than I ever had before.
I guess that's going to bias my advice somewhat :eh:
That said, I will try it with straight arms and see where that gets me

The height in the tricks following the roundoff comes from the legs, not the arms. Pushing up or not doesn't really effect the speed at which you come down into the ground. The thing that is going to effect it the most is how well you pull your legs together, and how well it is timed with the snap down, of the legs together, as well as speed.
The rotational force of your cartwheel is transfered into forward motion when your legs snap together at the height of your roundoff. At that point you can transfer it into downward motion by snapping them down into the ground. Then, you can change it to upward motion by blocking off the ground.
The arms don't have shit to do with anything. RUN fast (legs), use a good deep hurdle (legs), SNAP your legs together quickly at the peak (legs), and SNAP them down quickly to the ground at an angle that gives you proper blocking (legs), without bending them too much (this will absorb all your power), and you will soar. Oh, and get your arms up in the air right on the block (arms!!!).
Straight arms... uh... I guess they are better, I would think the only reason they are technically better though, is because they are more predictable. It might be hard to know exactly where you are if you use bent arms, cause each time you might be coming down on them with a different force, and they would compress differently, while straight arms are always going to send you on the exact same pathway of momentum over your peak, and then into the ground... personal preference I guess?
In summery, it's all in the LEGS. The arms don't matter.
Just because one guy can do a high flip and he happens to bend his arms doesn't prove anything.
