Improve it how? Can you do the splits? If you can do them then why improve?

HYPER SPLITSSS!! so basically, go into the splits, ask your mom or dad or cat to put something, ( maybe a book, or 2)underneath ur front foot.so basically, it overstretches ur splits.

You should stretch outside of your Tae Wwon Do class too. In class you might feel nervous or tense, and usually since it is drilled you have a set amount of time to do it in which may not be adequate. You also do it right before other exercises which isn't the safest thing to be doing after maximal static stretching.

You should still do the stretches in class, but slightly less than your maximum ability, which you can develope after class before going to bed (which will help if you have stiff muscles).

Taekwondo has nothing to do with this. We're discussing a separate martial art.

Yes. Anyway... what I always thought was cool training for splits (though splits itself is best) is hanging from a chin bar and then just actively trying to make your legs doing the splits. Fails every time for me. But that'd be static-active stretching yes? Only you wouldn't have to worry about load-bearing or keeping balance like you would when doing it standing.

On the other hand it's hella harder since at max legs horizantal they're directly fighting gravity. At max on a standing kick, they're not fighting it at all, so much that you could even topple backwards.

Yes it is, it's called static-active stretching. Part stretching, part strength. Read.

If it's a waste of time I wonder why it is encouraged so much.

Who said anything about kicking? I guess you could do that too in addition to doing it while jumping (like the girl in the newest Resident Evil Extinction promos). I'm talking about hanging there and actively trying to get the splits. It shouldn't replace any of the other stretches but I can't really see why it would hurt.

The only bitch is if you have a doorway chin bar like I do you have to make sure it's all the way open otherwise the door will stop your leg, and to attempt the side split stretch you need to face the hinge meaning you need to adopt a mixed 'military-style chin' grip. That's not really that bad though.

It doesn't even have to get its own time it's just something you can do while you do chins (might even help, the going up and down) much like people do 'L' chins or whatever.

Spagat is the way to call split but not even know i am not sure if it refers to Front or Side Splits.

Ashtar

In that case we should probably not use the word spagat, seeing as how it is longer than 'split' and unspecific and in some foreign language.

I can tell you what goes on in my class at least. Usually it starts off with the butterfly stretch where you're goal is to push your feet as close to your crotch as possible, put your knees to the floor, and try to smash your head into the floor over your feet. Then we usually straighten one foot out and keep the other at the crotch; press down on your knee with the hand of the bent leg and grab the bottom of your foot with the other hand. Then put the bent foot behind your back still bent and do the same thing. Repeat for other side of body. Then put one foot flat on the ground toes pointing in front of you and the other foot towards your side with the heel on the ground and the toes pointing up; try getting your butt as close to the floor without sitting on it and somehow maintaining your balance. After that you sit on your butt and stretch both legs out as far into the splits as you can get while keeping both of them flat on the floor. Touching toes exercises in that position. Then you lean forward and try to put your chest on the floor while keeping your butt and legs on the floor. After that, keeping the stretched position with your legs, pull your butt off the floor and lean on your elbows. Crawl backwards and forward on your elbows like that trying to stretch your splits as you progress.

That's basically the stretches that I do every class. But each day varies with other stretches like the front splits and using the wall to increase your side splits

They sound OK as far as relaxed stretches go. Assuming they tell you good stretching technique - gradual, painless etc.

You do these at the start or end?

I guess I would say the beginning, but it's more towards the middle of class. First we run around the room doing variations like jogging, sprinting, running sideways and backwards, duck walking, and frog hopping. Then weird Taekwondo versions of the high kick, inside crescent kick, and outside crescent kick. After that, we get those the stretching after which half the class time is gone.
