I was out today and finally decided to film my tornados cos they felt awful for ages so i would film one to watch where to improve. There are a few problems i can see that need improving but of course it's always better to have others opinions so what you guys think to this awful thing?

I'm willing to accept any advice as harsh as it is

You need to bring your left knee up higher before kicking with your right leg , this will make your kick higher and turning your hips over easier to make the kick more defined .

First off.. Get some flexibility and learn to inside crescent kick right. Then, learn the setup. Examine some dude with a good 540-setup and copy it - Don't have so much distance between your legs right before your jump. And you wanna get that non-kicking leg UP. That's it I guess.

Tornado is done with inside crescent or better (and harder) with round kick

Tut for both

Two things I recommend. Get yourself a nice target, like a tree or a bush. Then, FORGET THE STUPID GAY STEP IN THE BEGINNING. People always say step into it. Well, that's really throwing you off right now, so I recommend you lose the step.

Alright, without doing that infernal step that everyone hypes up so much, start with your kicking leg in front, facing your target. If it's your RIGHT leg in front, look over your LEFT shoulder and turn your head and shoulders until you see your target. Pick up ze non-kicking leg and swing 180 degrees towards the target (presumably someone you hate) and throw that leg up, because you need to jump. Then, once you start your jump, snap the kicking leg up and across. Draw a big half-circle above your head with your toes. Then just land.

Some people will probably disagree with me about my mini-tutorial, but that's because they're wrong. The object of a Tornado Kick is to float, not torque the hips violently. That would be a 540 Kick.

Damn, I should make a video...

did you even drill your roundhouse a little before you tried a tornado?

Kick through not to

What this sexy man said.

Also, you have to jump off from your would-be kicking leg. Try focusing on that a lot. Thats what really helped me.

Just dig that right foot hard to get some height. And train in getting a high crescent so you get better flexibility and you will have it.

This should be a given...
Anytime you're drilling a kick [or checking the quality of one] the camera serves as the target. This way, you can clearly see how you're body and the kick approches the target from an optimial viewpoint. In other words, position yourself directly in front of the camera.

From what I can tell...
You're jumping to the left too damn much...the tornado kick is a basic move that shouldn't require too much torque. It should be executed in place. Also, it seems like you're trying to kick the leg in an upwards arc [kicking it over the head, and down on the other side], which means that you're doing a Wushu Tornado. If so, then you need to inside crescent kick when you do the tornado [do not try to make it some type of hybrid kick], keep your toes pointed upwards and your heel pointing downwards throughout the kicking motion of the kick.

Weakness
Your jump is weak. Practice jumping on your right foot while keeping the other foot off the ground. Do them in repetitions of 5 jumps, and try to maximize your height in each jump. When you grow tired of that, practice doing just the "cheat setup" and focus on jumping as high as you can. Remember, the more you travel to the left or right, the less you travel upwards.

try to throw up your arms, it may help you to get some air on your kick, wich could help you, i know it helped me alot, and get some more flexibility in your kicking leg.

No.

Remember that since it's a kick, you want to have a target. Like Sessh said, the camera should be the target. But to expand upon that, it looks like you're just kicking, not actually trying to direct it or using a target. You can't just throw kicks willy-nilly, all flailing about. You have to have a target in mind, and you have to have a focal point for your eyes or you will be off balance and kick slopily. When you do this, you will kick and move forward, not kick left and hop right, or whatever. Use a kicking target, or a low branch, or even have some brave person hold out an open hand for you to aim at.

People (Swartz) will tend to disagree with me that you need to learn to apply the kick (or any kick) but when you can hit a target well with a kick it makes the move more precise, faster, crisper, and more visually pleasing.

Think I'm wrong? Take a look at some of the kicks done by non-m.a. trixters. Some of them are pretty good, most of them are pretty shit.

1. You look like ur not fit
2. You should put ur left knee high up, and jump high up, and the kick hard and turn ur hips lol

The colored part of "point 2" is pretty important, when doing a Wushu Tornado Kick your hips will turn over once you've kicked the target. It's a small detail that makes a big difference.

You take any MA or anything? Might wanna drill some basics for flexibility / basic knowledge of kicking, Tornado is pretty basic but is pretty useless without the ability to take some ones head. So I 2nd what Short Gorilla previously stated.

still, if your going to have a nice high tornado you kick, you'll want to get some air, and if your plan is to kick a guy in the face, you'd better get that air, as a MA and only ½trixter my opinion is different, but the higher. the faster, the stronger a tornado kick is, the more effective it is.
