View Full Version : Revamping my diet (suggestions request)

I'm 6'0" (181 cm), 176 pounds (80 kg), and about 8% bodyfat. As such, I don't really need to lose weight at any quick pace, but I also don't have much time to go lift weights with my current schedule so right now I'm aiming towards just sustaining my weight or minor weight loss. Currently, my diet includes the following.

oatmeal (for breakfast and constant mini-meals throughout the day)
white rice
pinto beans
ground turkey
(the previous three are all cooked up and mashed together for mini-meals throught the day with salsa)
potatos (also eaten with salsa for mini-meals)
onions
carrots
eggplant
bananas
fat free yogurt
fat free milk
tuna
Puffed Wheat (it's a low calorie cereal with fiber)
salsa

Everything else I eat isn't common enough to mention or I just plain forgot it. I'm thinking about removing beans and rice from my diet completely but I don't know how good an idea that is. Also, I intend to add eggs, cottage cheese, nuts, and more fruits. I might cut out the milk too.

It's entirely possible people have better suggestions than what I plan. I'm not really a nutrition expert and my diet is made with limited information. If you have any foods you think are essentials or anything you think I should get rid of, tell me.

Don't cut the beans (if anything I would add a larger variety of beans and lentils).

White rice would be better replaced with brown rice or basmati rice.

Add more fruit and vegetables. Eat a variety of fresh, tinned and frozen produce, not just the same old things all the time.

Don't limit yourself too much. Eat a variety of meats and fish, not just tuna and turkey.

Add more fats. Things like nuts, seeds, avocado, oils etc...

You're obviously able to tell what is and isn't good for you. So don't be too anal with yourself. Experiment with a variety of healthy foods and everything will be fine.

I probably wouldn't bother cutting weight either.

Unless you have an extremely low fat set point, it would take a concentrated effort to reduce fat further, without losing a significant amount of muscle at the same time at that kind of percentage.

Why would you even consider anything but trying to GAIN weight at this point?

You are underweight. Why the hell are you eating like you are dieting?

no, mr popular.
80kg at 181cm is not underweight.

Your average 6 foot tall human male is supposed to weight between 190 and 200lbs.

At 176lbs, I am sure this creature is pure bones.

"supposed to"? says who? someone with problems about their body image i should think

acrobatic athletes at the top of their game will be lighter than that

According to the BMI, overweight for 6'0" is 184 pounds. That's lower than what seems right in my opinion. For people my height, you would need some serious muscle to reach 190 pounds and not be pushing it. I attached some pictures showing what my figure looks like (and my horrible tan lines).

Also, one thing I was planning on asking and completely forgot to is what kind of nuts to buy if you're poor as hell? Almonds are annoyingly expensive at nearly $4/pound and the cheapest nuts are peanuts covered with sugar and salt. If y'all have any tips on saving money while buying nuts, I would appreciate it.

More like 15-17%

I reckon you're not sub-10% BF.

Buy the peanuts and wash them off in a rinse bowl. I recommend trying to find nut mixes though. They provide a better blend of amino acids, fat and nutrients.

yes - OP, how did you measure your bf%, or was it just a guess?

yes - OP, how did you measure your bf%, or was it just a guess?

It's the result of an electronic scale. I personally have no clue how to measure body fat from appearance, but judging by the overwhelming vote that I'm over 8%, I'm willing to believe it. I guess I'll stop using the body fat percentage feature of that particular scale. Is there any other way to measure body fat percentage other than a better scale?

shengoikee

bioelectrical impedance test (this costs like $50 or something....) or body fat callipers

you may find you're at least 15% judging by appearance

Rahf

Scales that have the function of measuring bodyfat suck. They show your weight just fine but never trust their bodyfat numbers. Either do caliper or maybe a bod-pod test. It doesn't matter how expensive of a scale you buy, they'll differ insanely much from the real number anyway.

shengoikee
Oct-01-07, 12:01 PM
the reason they suck is because they either measure the lower body/upper body but never both. a proper electrical impedance test will have four probes on the right side of the body. two on the hand and two on the foot; and will likely take a half hour or so.

Holy crap dude what is that turd-worm you have dangling from your head???

While the sides and back of my head are buzzed, the top of my hair is tied into a nearly 3 foot long braid. It has a lagging momentum that shadows me when I twist with about a 1 second interval. It looks kind of cool until I smack myself in the face; then it's just funny.

Oi reckon you can pretty much eat whatever you like if you time it correctly and get the right amounts of macronutrients and calories.

Just various comments:

Whoever said for him to get his body fat via BIA is retarded because his scale measures body fat via BIA and it was horribly wrong (note: you have to follow the directions in order for that to be fairly accurate, I think the error is +-10%)

Mr Popular, not everyone wants to bulk. Even if he was super skinny and didn't want to bulk, who cares?

BMI is also garbage, but that was already mentioned.

Add more fruits and vegetables, replace the white rice with brown, cook your own beans instead of eating from a can, make sure the oatmeal your eating is the old style cylinder kind.

And why would you remove the rice and beans?

EDIT: Plus, eat 5-6 pop tarts daily. Preferably the cinnamon ones.

After mentioning pop-tarts after serious advice, I don't know if it's a joke or not anymore. Since I can't imagine what about a pop-tart would be healthy, I'm still assuming it's a joke. But if not, please tell me how it's healthy. I have a feeling I'm just rather gullible though.

I have been cooking my own beans. The only things I eat from a can are tuna and corn. The thing about beans and rice is they seem to be an appetite enhancer and I'm weak willed (a lesson made incredibly obvious when I bought some honey).

What are the best types of Pop Tarts anyway? The cinnamon ones are very good, but I've had some other excellent flavors also. S'more was memorable but I don't know if it's superior, and strawberry and blueberry were quite good.

Yeah, around where I live too, there is only the misery of Strawberry.

My vote goes for cherry when it's been put through a toaster. So delicious! As well, blueberry can be quite refreshing. If I eat one more smores one, however, I will have a fatal ulcer.

I frequently would eat two chocolate poptarts and 2 cups of whole milk as one of my meals when initially trying to gain weight.

it came out to about 714 calories total for just that. Pretty useful! But I felt it had adverse effects on my body composition.
