View Full Version : Pre-Sleep Workout?

I was just wondering if it is OK to do a pre-sleep flexibility workout, if it doesn't stop me sleeping? It wouldn't be anything major though.

This is what I'm thinking:
Flamingos (to improve balance)(a few variations)
Arm Circles (10 per arm per direction)
Arm Out Swings (10)
Arm Up Swings (10)
Arm Pec-Deck Swings (10)
Fly (10)
Trunk Rotations (until slightly dizzy)
Side Bends (10 per side)
Knee Raises (10 per leg)
Butt Kicks (10 per leg)
Front Kicks (10 per leg)
Rear Kicks (10 per leg)
Side Kicks (10 per leg)
Toe Touches (10)
Split Attempts

It's not set in stone, just something along those lines.

Thoughts?

Let's see, yeah yeah, it's alright, although you're missing bridges and shit (don't neglect your back)

Looks OK for a dynamic workout. I'd prefer to do dynamic stretching in the morning or before your training, though.

However I don't know wether "Toe Touches/side bends (10)" are dynamic or rather balistic (the baaad)? Anyway they're not mentioned in juji's guides, any suggestions? Or are they ok if you stay in control...

I do them before workouts too, I just want a time to incorporate...Well, anything. I'm thinking of adding handstands/headstands and stuff too. It's just various bodyweight stuff TBH, to improve skills, balance, flexibility etc.

Juji does have side bends in his article.

As for toe touches, I don't think they're ballistic. When I do them I'm just trying to get as low as possible (currently knuckles to floor), but I'm doing them controlled at a medium speed pace.

These sound like dynamic stretches. Do them in the morning. They'll help wake you up. They won't help you get to sleep. Some static stretching is fine, and I guess doing some of this to warm up for the static stretching is fine.

I do worm up 10 min as soon as a wake up from the bed and then Front Split at 7am! SPLIT AT 7am.

get up, get hot, get split.

Maximal static stretching in the morning? Unorthodox!

I don't care if they help me get to sleep or not. I've tried in the morning, but normally I don't have time (or not really anyway). Plus, trying to do a handstand when you first wake up isn't easy.

-Waist twists
-Oblique sidebends
-Back bends
-Levitation
All good for becoming flexible around your core area.

Usually handstands aren't a warmup exercise :p

Yeah, well, it's not a warmup is it! Workout =/= Warmup!

And handstand pushups can easily be a warmup exercise.

What are you warming up for, a one-arm handstand pushup?

I'm not warming up!!

Well someone is, since they're using handstand pushups as a warmup. I guess it could be a warmup for military pressing heavier than your bodyweight.

"You" didn't mean you, it meant a general 'one' kind of you. Like "how do you jump off a building" I'm not saying you have experience with it.

...Anyway "Pre-Sleep Workout?" i don't think you want to be doing handstands before you go to bed:smile:

Why not?

It's a workout, not a warmup. Sure, it includes stretches. But it's a flexibility/balance/general workout.

Okay cool so it's a variation of things before bed.Understood.But..."I" wouldn't choose to do it before bed because "I" wouldn't be able to get to sleep after that.

I read in a kundalini yoga book that washing your feet before bed helps you get to sleep.
