Well I guess there's no more apporpriate time to make this post since Kalman's Post-Surgery Sampler was officially released today...

For anyone who didn't already know, at the GA Gathering this year, about 10-15 minutes into the actual tricking session, I blew out my left knee. Unlike Scalco (more similar to Kalman though), I did it on a move that I'd done loads of times and never even comtemplated hurting myself on. Being a veteran of the blown knee scenario (I blew out my right knee in 2005), I pretty much knew what went down while I clung to my knee on the floor. After my friends helped me off the floor and fixed up my knee until I could get a ride home, I kinda sat on the sidelines and started seriously thinking about my future and whether or not tricking should be a part of it anymore.

** I posted the video a while back, but this is the proper place for it I guess**

Anyway, I began doing what I remembered of the physical therapy almost immediately as well as training the rest of my body to stay in shape. I saw the doctor and he ordered the MRI, etc. Well, I saw the doctor today, and here's the damage report:

+ ACL - Grade 3 Tear
+ MCL - Grade 2 Tear
+ PCL - Grade 1 Tear (Sprain)
+ Lateral and Medial Meniscus both have tears.

The video doesn't look nearly as bad as my brag sheet, haha. Anyway, I begin physical therapy on Monday and will be having surgery around the Thanksgiving time frame. I expect I'll still be around the forums, probably more so than before, but I fully intend to take my PT to the max and make a second return.

Physics... you ain't broke me yet man...

Peace,

Ryan

Damn dude.

All injuries are a pain to even watch.

I hope you get well, and if it's not chronical, there's nothing from stopping you from doing what you love - tricking!

Good luck!

ouch. I can sympathize, on new years eve of 2005, we were mucking around with a Giant Swiss ball thing, (about 4 foot in diameter) and I bounced off and dislocated my knee-cap, and was lying in agonising pain for about 5 minutes till the ambulance arrived to take me to A&E. Luckily I didn't tear any ligaments though, just over-stretched them. The only cool thing was they gave me NOS while they lifted me onto the stretcher haha that was rather strange!

I hope you recover soon, being injured sucks! (I tore my short adductor in my left thigh at easter this year!)

I feel for you man. I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I was tricking and I went for a sideflip and landed it in a way that all the impact was absorbed by both my knees. Anyways my right knee was alright after a day, but I could barely walk on my left leg for a week. It was so painful, and I honestly regretted even starting tricking, because my parents already think its dumb and they told me I would get hurt doing something stupid like this. I almost quit tricking because I couldn't believe how easily I injured myself doing such a simple move that I've already done 100 times. I felt so stupid and almost felt like giving up, and worst of all I couldn't even tell my parents I was hurt. After a while though when I was feeling better I decided to trick again, and try another sideflip, and everything went alright this time. So I'm glad I didn't give up that easily. Injuries suck though, I'm just glad I didn't get injured as badly as you did. Hope you get better soon.

damn. sucks man.
never fucked my knee, but tore a bunch of shit in my ankle and was out for about 7 months...its no fun at all. It gives you a chance to catch up on other stuff though, stretching, lifting or real life stuff.
just hopefully you don't get sidetracked during the long recovery like I did.
i wish you a speedy and complete recovery man!

lol so im just to the point where i wanna get this thing over with and start the recovery, thats a time issue almost more than it is a will and strength thing just because of the whole tendon becoming a ligament jazz. blah!! hurry up life!

I couldn't bare the idea of going into surgery or tearing my knees and ankles to pieces. Suppose i'll just have to take it easy

Dear Ryan, I wonder if there is any precaution can be made in the next time you trick (you must get well soon!!) .
Ur injury was sort of impact-caused tearing or else?
In the vid I saw that during ur landing, ur leg shake a bit at the knee, will it help if u use some knee patch to fix its position?

Anyway, hope u would recover very soon!
