I was reading up on some random things on a martial arts/tricking/all around health web site and I came across this:
"The Vitamins A, C, E, Glutathione, Glutamine, and Selenium are important antioxidants and essential in preventing free radical damage ( Cancer ), Especially weight training accelerates the production of free radicals. The antioxidants protect cells from beeing damaged by oxidizing themselves. "
I have never heard of this before.
Is this true, and if so what's the science behind it?
thanks.

Yes this is true but reading your thread is more carcinogenic then weight training. I hope you're happy. I could have cancer because of this.

DURING weight training, yes, it produces free radicals. So does remaining alive, breathing, or walking around. Metabolism generates free radicals. It is more efficient with energy this way. There have been countertheories posted on how the training and subsequent recovery have been beneficial.

These probably aren't the article, but it addresses the topic http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/par62.htm

It's pretty much common sense that exercise increases free radical production. So does a higher resting metabolism.
This is why nutrition is so important.

here's the site. http://www.flashmavi.com/nutrition_vitamines.shtml
yeah I was just wondering if it was damaging at all.
I suspected it did not really affect overall health.
But the sentence before said free radical damage then said weight training so I just was curious.
Thanks for the links Ashtar.

People bang on about free radicals all the time, and they don't know what they are haha.

People talk about all kinds of things all the time that they don't understand to more than a very shallow level. There's no problem with that.

It's ok discussing things you understand at a shallow level, but when you're trying to inform the masses you need a complete understanding... otherwise it's terrible cycle of misinformation.
so yeah :|

Free radicals aren't inherantly bad just like antioxidants aren't inherantly good. There are times when our body creates free radicals to attack other organisms, and they must be produced as part of breathing air. Supporting the creation of natural AOs like glutathione and having a good deal in the diet is probably just protective though.
While exercise is damaging in the short term, it also stimulates recovery procesess to overcompensate. It might to do that for the free radical dmg too.
