View Full Version : Soy Protein
What are the cons of it? I have heard that it has estrogenlike properties and should be avoided in large quantities. I got eas premium protein(BCAAs I believe) at a local costco, and realized it had soy in it. Is the product to strong for me, the bcaas, and why should one avoid soy?

Don't worry about it too much. I would still use the powder.
You might hear people say that soy will turn you into a girl, but that's obviously a bit extreme.
ive been using the same costco protein, and i have been able to keep my manliness
i think you should be alright. it is a good protein
edit: and costco is the best store ever. it has never failed to disappoint me with price, quality, or quantity. i wish there was one in athens
i just stock up every time i am in cleveland
even if you do not plan on buying anything you can still get a decent meal
Yay for costco! I also buy things there like cheap, yet effective multivitamins. Thanks guys, I had just heard a lot of things of soy that I was confused

Sounds like you've either bought tobacco or alcohol .
There are no real cons with soy protein. In a comparison of amino acid profiles and beneficial effects, it is in the bottom chain of the protein products. If the soy is a part of a mix and not the single source then it should be absolutely fine. Soy + estrogen is harmless (like Compleks said).

In general people say to avoid soy products because they contain isoflavones (the phytoestrogens found in soybeans) which bind with estrogen receptors in the body.
Some say over a long period of time this could alter your hormonal balance, in effect turning you into an Oprah-watching, romance-novel-reading faggot.
However, no conclusive studies have been done on the long term effects of phytoestrogens in human males.
Besides it's practically impossible to avoid soy in industrialized nations anyway...
don't worry about it.
Thanks for the confirmation Rahf and mr. popular. So as long as it is part of mix it is fine. Gotcha. :good:

Don't get me wrong. Soy protein in itself is still a decent protein source but there are definitely better alternatives.

Products containing soy blocks testosterone production and causes a slight increase in estrogen. Is this not true?

Yes soy protein does lower testosterone levels.
In conclusion, soy protein, regardless of isoflavone content, decreased DHT and DHT/testosterone with minor effects on other hormones. The relevance of the magnitude of these effects to future prostate cancer risk requires further investigation.
J Nutr. 2005 Mar;135(3):584-91.
This in turn can have an effect in the form off reduced risk for certain cancer types as well as heart problems. I wouldn't worry about the manhood.

But it does not lower it significally for one to notice right?

What do you think you would notice?
I dunno, hips or breasts or something like that or feeling more emotional than normal. Oh and should I be fine if I consume 70 grams of this mix of casein whey and soy?

Feeling more emotional than normal? I reckon puberty will take care of that mate.
I already stated that your manhood is in no danger. Soy protein will not turn you into a female. So yes, you should be fine.
Okay nice to know, I just worry a lot about that heh. Thanks again Rahf.

Testosterone is kinda anabolic, so would it reduce your performance (not necessarily noticeably)? Or let's say the performance of elite athletes? (e.g. elite sprinters losing some hundredths of seconds...)
I'd think they use more optimal sources than soy. That's an assumption though. Elite sprinters could lose some hundredths of seconds just by having a bad day so it would be hard to measure if soy was the culprit other than checking biological reactions.
Yes testosterone is a part of muscle recovery, muscle building etc. But it is not the single factor that produces every result there is. Think in the terms of "many a small thing makes a big thing" (Många bäckar små gör en stor å) when it comes to testosterone.
Unless you're an elite athlete I wouldn't worry.

Yes in general people really need to just focus on the basics and not worry about all these unimportant little details.
