View Full Version : Strengthening my hips.

When I drill tornado kicks or 360 kicks (attempted 360's...) my hip muscles (mainly hip flexor) get sore after about 5-10 full-blown attempts. I think just the force and rotation is pulling on the muscles.
Any ideas how i could strengthen my hip muscles? My only ideas were static active stretching and leg raises.. any better ideas?

training your deadlifts and power cleans will most likely cure this completely :good:

Kicking a lot helps too.

Reckon you could add squat variations to that? Doesn't work the hip extensors in the same way though.

well i was just giving some examples of lifts specific for hip extension
everyone with a pair of balls should squat but i'm not sure if this will help his hips haha

Keep practicing your kicks.

Keep working on those moves. Your body will get used to those movements and your endurance will increase with time.

Frankinstine told me that putting G.I. Joes in your ass helps you kick better.

You have it mistaken Short Gorilla. Putting a G.I. Joe figure up your rectum does not allow you to perform a kick better. It gives you a sensation. When you start the kick, you will feel this temporarily sharp pain. It feels good. When you are done your practice, it leaves a mark that could take hours even days to recover. That is the orgasm mark. Good luck. I hope you can achieve the holy mark as well.
That G.I Joe is actually prostate cancer.

It works if you use Snake Eyes or Quick Kick, but Road Block is never coming out.

Okay so I'll just keep practicing.
Should I try and do the kicks really slow (similar to when bodybuilding) instead of really fast to help strengthen it?
Well I guess I'd do it slow and fast, fast for technique and getting better at tricking :juji:
should I strengthen all the muscle groups around my hips? for example, glutes, quads, abs, obliques, hips flexors, adductors and abductors?

Do both.
Mind you, I'm not sure that jumping spin kicks can be done slowly.

Yes, this would be a good idea as well.

I meant just the kick itself, as that uses most of the muscles that you use in the jump + kick + torque and spin with leg. But yeah, thanks for the advice.
Is doing static-active stretching going to strengthen my hip muscles?

How well are you warming up?

usually i'll do light jogging and hops to get the blood flowing, then move onto some dynamic stretches, knee raises, front lifts, side lifts, back lifts, then crescent kicks, inside and outside. If I'm going to be doing b-kicks usually I'll do some dips, and leg circles (which I cant do very well)

Well then it's most likely technique problems actually. Got any vids?
When I was first learning 540's I had absolutely horrible technique (well, and flexibility), and this left quite the strain on my poor leg. In fact, the strain was pretty severe so I couldn't do many tricks using it for QUITE a long time. :agony:

I have my camera back from my mum and sister who took it on holiday to vanuatu so I'll go record a video of me doing a tornado kick now downstairs (its pouring with rain outside ) then upload it. so you might see it later tonight or tomorrow or something.

You're a lanky bastard.

Maybe I should post a 3 second vid flexing my bicep.
hahaha that would be great.
Then post it in this subforum as "HUGE BICEP VIDEO!"

I didn't say it like a negative thing. More of a declarative statement. Please do the bicep video though, haha.

The problem is your form and you're barely putting any effort into the move.

You can obvisiously tell there is no power in your movements.

Put more effort in your tornado kick. Concentrate on your form. You are traveling to much forward and sometimes to much to the side.
Use a target like a paper which hangs from the ceiling or something like that and hit it, hit it hard.
Imagine a line on the ground and try not to travel to the side.
Look at where your kicking foot touches the ground. Your back faces the target. Thats wrong.
Jump more and bend your non kicking leg more. A little bit more body tension would also be good.
Be fast and explosive. Trick to kill :juji:

Thanks for the tips I'll work on improving aiming and all that stuff you mentioned.
The problem when I try and put power into the move is it hurts my hip, which is why I started this thread, I need to stabilise my hip. I'm working on it now and hopefully within a month you'll see another video of me with a sweet as tornado kick :juji:
