Hey guys i went for my yearly check up not to long ago and my doctor said i was lacking some vitamins. So I went to shoppers drug mart yesterday and bought some centrum vitamin pills. Is this healthy or should i not even take any of these? I did some searching around and 2 out of 10 says this can be toxic for you, but I'm not sure maybe you guys can help me out.

I don't know the exact daily requirements, but that's not too high. I mean, pantothenic acid 10mg? That's very low, especially for athletes.

Centrum tends to underestimate a lot of the vitamin needs based upon the RDA. I mean hell, look at the 90mg vit C.

I take them, and look at me. They can't help you that much, but they are probably better than nothing, especially if you don't eat many vitamin-laden foods.

I'm sure it's fine. But it won't solve the problem of poor eating habits.

Buy some fruit and vegetables instead.

There's a recently made formula known as "Centrum Performance"

I'm sure it's just a beefed up version of the Regular Centrum.

i was talking to a friend who is a pharmicist and she said that they got a letter from the TGA(therapeutic goods of australia) that basically said that most vitamin and mineral supplements dont get absorbed by the body. the body can't absorb the synthetic substance. it continued to say that you can tell whether a supplement has a real affect (compared to a placebo) by looking at the code on the bottle. i am talking about australia here so bare with me. anyway for those guys who live in australia all vitamin supplements and the like have codes on them. there are two types the AUSTL with number (ie AUSTAL 98980) or AUSTR with number. the TGA said that the AUSTL are safe to use and have no negative affects and the AUSTR will have positive affects prescribed by the lable (not placebo reaction).

now every supplement i have seen is basically in the AUSTL catergory which would basically mean most supplements are a waste of money.

thoughts?

This is a well-known fact.

A test I learned is to put your vitamin into some vinegar and stir it every 5 minutes, and in 20 minutes if the whole vitamin isnt dissolved it won't dissolve in your stomach.

There are so many damn different forms of centrum. I'm actually eating '2 a day' because I got them as a birthday present. Shit I'm not even finished them, I obviously don't take them as perscribed. I liked the 'forte' kind because it had added stuff.

and by that do you mean that supplements are a waste of money because they don't do anything for the body?

No I don't mean all supplements. I do mean many, if not most do. Glutamine is probably the best example.

Fuck vitamin supplements. Just eat properly and you'll be much better off.
