View Full Version : The word "healthy". What does it mean to you?
As it is written, what does "healthy food" mean to you? This is a good opportunity to possibly clear up misconceptions for people. Be as honest as you can.

Not containing excessive amounts of salt/HFCS/trans fats/additives. Or ridiculous amounts of saturated fat.

Whey is healthy?
As far as I know, whey is nothing more than protein from milk/cheese.

It doesn't qualify in the unhealthy section of Konnar. Does anyone see where I'm beginning to get at?
A few maybe but they already knew.

That it's not always one or the other, sometimes it can be "indifferent" so to speak, and merely "just there" and able to have any number of effects, positive, negative, or neutral?

Healthy food: Generally stuff high in vitamins/minerals, low in trans-fats/additives etc. Normally as it is from nature, like fruit, veg, meat, nuts etc. I consider everything on the paleo diet healthy (even though I don't eat a paleo diet). Chocolate and things like that aren't healthy IMO, but they're no way near as bad as fast food (lard-burgers and fatchips).
However, I don't think the vegetarian DIET is incredibly healthy, or at least I believe they could be a lot healthy by including, y'know, meat.

I don't really see any one food as healthy. Saying an apple is healthy doesn't make much sense to me. Sure, the apple can be good for you, but I don't think the word healthy is a good descriptor.
Healthy, to me, is more a description of lifestyle, or diet as a whole.

Yes like complex said, it all has to fit together. A bar of chocolate won't kill you if the rest of your diet is good, but an apple won't save you from Hell if you're just eating shit in the rest of your time. Also it depends on your Activities what amount of food you need and which ingredients are more important. So in my opinion eating healthy means giving your Body the things he needs to manage the things you want it to do in the most effective way. It doesn't have to be all natural. Supplements are also a part of healthy eating habits, because its an very effective way to get certain vital substances which are normally not contained sufficiently in our modern-zivilasation-food, or which expenditure is highly increased by sports, so that athlets have to consume much higher amounts of them. Of course healthy eating also includes to resign on things which are not good for your body.

Yes i see what you're getting at,I used to believe all the "healthy food/weight watchers" packaging but now i see through their deception and my knowledge about "healthy" foods has now grown in a vast amount.I'll try to simplify my answer but say a banana is considered as a "healthy food",to eat a couple in a day is fine(healthy) but if you eat an excessive amount then you would be consuming more carbs than you need which in result would be "unhealthy",also the guide line is anything natural= healthy,so man-made foods would be bad,HFCS and hydrogenated oils etc.=fake="unhealthy".

Not everything that is natural is good for you though.

Here's another thought for the people out there. Say you fill your quota of protein, micronutrients, fiber etc and you still have 500 calories to go before you reach your planned daily intake. What would you consume in order to reach it?

I really can't say anything here because I know I eat really unhealthy. I get fast food 7 days per week, and there's really nothing i can do about it, so I'm not complaining.
But ideally, to answer the 500 calorie question, it really depends on what you are doing. For example, if you have a marathon to run the next day, I'd be certain to eat 500 calories worth of complex carbohydrates 6 hours before the run. Otherwise, I'd balance the 500 calories pretty evenly, getting unsaturated fats, carbs, and a bit more protein.
Pfft, 500kcal is nothing, there's no need to be that fussy about it.

I'd probably bake a healthy low GI Pie consisting of oats, wholewheat flour, nuts, ground flax, eggs, milk and berries.
I can just imagine.................Beautiful!

The main reason whole grains are better than enriched is because when they re-enrich the stripped grain they often don't put back everything taken out. But in theory, they could do that and more, excessively fortifying it with nutrients. That's why the 'whole grain' stuff is kind of a scam, it makes more sense to just look at the composition on the wrapper for the amount of vitamins in it.
Plus grains period probably can't compare to most vegetables.

To me healthy simply means increasing the positive abilities of my body. I think of healthy as constant improvement of my own self, rather than strict guidelines that could be considered precisely healthy.
