View Full Version : New year at uni, new sports to do..

Last year I did lacrosse for about 6 months then basically stopped. I was shit at it and everyone else shot past me in ability, plus the whole social side of it was really lame. Or I'm really lame, actually - but either way I didn't fit with it. You know how it is - all university clubs/teams are about drinking, and nothing more.
I also could no way keep up with the several training sessions per week, and certainly would have to cease all personal exercise like weight lifting.

Today was "Freshers' Fair" where all the clubs and societies have a stall and try to get new members. I have a few sports to go along to for introductory sessions:

> American football
A small poorly-funded club, only started last year, and hopefully a chance to run into people (which is what I wanted from lacrosse but it turned out to be all about stick skills)

> Roller hockey
I can skate pretty well?

> Boxing
> MMA
I just want to spar, really. I can't be bothered with a formal approach to it all, I just want to pad up and fight someone, because I never have.

> Gymnastics
A club full of spongey pale girls doing cartwheels. I wonder if they could help me learn some basic tumbling and stuff.

> Back to lacrosse?
Hmm, like MMA/boxing I don't want to bother improving my skills, since I only have 8 months with these clubs anyway. I just want to play a game every so ofton for the fun of it.

Any opinions?

Well if you are there for only 8 months and are serious about tricking, get some help at the gymnastics place. Nastics training is fucking good for you and you pick up a few things.

Boxing - is gay, there are no kicks and every boxer i know has turkey legs
MMA - Depends what you would be doing in it. If its MMA chances are you wont be needed to wear GIs and go through belts, you would be strength training and fighting. You would learn everything a boxer does plus MOAR. Fuck Lacrosse.

So...Gymnastics would be number one option for me but I dont know much about what the MMA is offering. See if its good or the mcdojo type.

Well I don't trick yet - but some day I need to learn the basics.

Yea boxing is gay, but I'd get to spar at least.

The MMA club looks alright, they've got some serious fighters from what I heard. Guys sitting on the floor in black training gear with a flame beanie, haha. I'll go along to the first session and see if it looks like I'd get a chance to spar or not.

MMA clubs are good because they'll usually let you have a bash at some fighting the first time you attend.

I guess some boxing clubs might be the same but they one I went to was mostly fucking calisthenics.

Not including kicks doesn't make a martial art gay.

For once tycoil the information idiot™ is correct. Birch's little anti-boxing tirade was stupid.

VERY DUMB QUESTION.

This is TRICKStutorials.com. Not "whatsportshouldidodiscussion.com"

Obviously the best sport to pick would be the one that would teach you the most tricks. So do gymnastics!!

If you do some backflips in the gym and stuff and show them that you're not a total noob then other people will think you're awesome. If you find out that the gymnastics course that they're providing doesn't even teach cartwheels and it's all just starjumps (jumping jacks) and stretches then forget about all the lame sports altogether and see if you can make your own army of trickers at your uni.

The only other sport option that comes to mind is branle. It's just good, fun excercise.

oh sorry, yea. I guess we better actually delete the 4 extracurricular activities forums and the publicus. Why not e-mail Juji about it - he must have not noticed there were rogue non-tricking discussions going on.
