View Full Version : Motivation Issues?

Ouriço

Okay, I wanted to post and ask this here, since it is starting to concern me. The issue is that, for whatever reason, I seem to have some serious motivation issues. I don't know how many of you have experienced this, but let me detail what I'm talking about.

There are certain things (goals) I'll set for myself, and tell myself I need to do to be better. Things like..

*Keep up with all school work so I can get into UNF.
*Learn some more tricks out in the front yard.
*Use the Rosetta Stone program I spent $200 on to learn Portuguese.
*Work out on a daily basis.
*Practice hard for my Batizado next year.

But when I get home from work/school, it seems that all I can get myself to do is browse TT, sleep, or play some shitty video game. Can anything be done to fix this issue? You may just call it laziness, but it's really starting to concern me.

No that is a serious response when you think about it.
My life used to revolve around video games and a computer, then I met a great girl and by god she motivated me to do things I wanted/needed to do.

It may not be a relationship but try and find something that will motivate you. If you cant find anything maybe you are just bored of/cant do it and may need to look somewhere else for things to do.

To be honest Birch had a good response to begin with. If you can't find a girl Ourico, you can drop by my place.

Well the problem with getting laid is someone doesn't usually want to have sex/date someone who does nothing but sit on an internet forum and play videogames or they don't want to date someone who whines about being lazy.

You don't really have a problem, if you did you would just start doing things instead of spending time on here asking questions like that when you know you're not going to get serious answers. You think that tomorrow, tomorrow I will work out, learn portugese, etc. But today I'll sit around and play Halo 3 and maybe play with my dick a little bit. But tomorrow I'll be the man I want to be.

Actually I fucking hate the Halo series. I just have that there because I hadn't changed it in awhile.

Anyway, it's not the fact that video games consume my life, but just that I'm fucking lazy and not motivated at all. I only asked this here because usually issues are taken a little more seriously outside The Publicus. Take Compleks for example.

But this thread has clearly been ruined.

Adrianeline and Parasite are the only ones being helpful here. I think I'll just start putting my laptop out of site until I have done what needs to be done. That may help. And by the way, I don't even own a game console. When I said shitty games, I actually meant shitty games. Like on the internet. <_<

I can give you some real advice, I have always been a very motivated person.

Set up some sort of training schedule like tricking monday tricks lifting tuesday thursday tricks and then after like a work out try to chillax with some Portuguese (how is that program by the way)?

Always focus on what you will be able to achieve if you stay motivated, a btwist swing through gainerfull or something, or having a little conversation in Portuguese and then maybe understand part of a song.

Ourico I have a similar problem, I've got alot of similar goals. Except unfortunately I left my cordao de ouro capoeira group, so I just train by myself at home. You are in high school, right? You could do what I'm doing....join an athletic team just for the pre-season workouts, then just work hard on the team. It helps you meet new people and gets you out of the house. Since I actually have teammates to support me, I'm able to wake up at 5 in the morning to lift with the team. I've tried to lift on my own time, and it worked for a while, but I would always become too lazy. I'd come home from school exhausted and I'd just sleep, browse TT/4chan, or go over to someones house to play video games.

Yeah, I know that joining a sports team might be a big commitment, but it can help. Even if you suck balls at a sport such as wrestling or soccer, since you are with your school peers, you already have that schedule made for you!

You might also just want to find a friend who has similar goals as you, and just work with him. Pressure each other to get work done. Perhaps go to the gym with a friend, work out....play a sport then just chill and play video games. Find SOMEONE or SOMETHING that gives you motivation from an outside source. I dont know about you, but for me, I can't trust myself for my motivation. After a few weeks I grow absurdly lazy.

Hell, even try to get a girl. That could motivate you to work out more.

Haha, and I had a similar issue with portuguese, I have some relatives from brazil who can only speak it, so I tried learning portuguese for a while but I grew too lazy. Now I just use my sister, who is fluent, to communicate with them.

Really, making a schedule like rahf said could help too, and after months of following that schedule you won't be so lazy anymore and you'll soon be able to trust yourself enough to do the things you NEED to get done and do the things that laziness WANTS you to do.

:EDIT: Oh yeah and martialartsguy, Rosetta stone, along with most other language learning programs are all very good. People just say they are shit because they are too lazy to go through with it, and when they actually have to work and don't get instant results, they say the program sucks.

And to sum up what I said, just read short gorillas post. I just provided ways to go about doing what short gorilla said.

What you can do is just get a fucking watch, and have it beep after two hours of playing video games, so you dont lose track of time and sit on your ass all day playing bioshock or something.

Only let yourself on the computer as a reward after doing something.

Your goals are kind of lofty at the moment. Break them down into more manageable chunks, and then write yourself a schedule, and stick to it. It will become habitual soon enough, and things will get done.

Re-evaluate your goals often, and reward yourself when you achieve something. Don't be overly strict on yourself though.
Make sure your goals are clearly visible. Write them on your walls if you have to.

But it's such an awesome game!

Only let yourself on the computer as a reward after doing something.
I find goals like that never work. It persuades me NOT to do the workout in some ways even. Think about it - I could limit myself and make myself do some work to do something...Or just do what I want to do. The second option is a LOT easier.

So yeah, for me goals and rewards don't work.

That's a different issue then.
Goals and rewards work for everyone, you just need to apply them in a way which will 'work' for you.
I suggested that technique as a temporary solution to help get around his computer addiction. Not that it's really an addiction, more so just the habit of wasting time.

External motivation and rewards will only work for so long. But it can work long enough to develop new habits, and a more intrinsic (internal) motivation.

Haha! Give me a break. Flaming you seems to be working as well. Discouraging you to post and therefore not visit here or do other crap on the computer as much. The way I see it, the urge you had to post about your motivational problems should have been a realization that you shouldn't post about it to begin with.

Wow, what a productive thread! O_O

They've got it all right with writing a routine/schedule. I do the same thing and it's a lifesaver, it does just about half the work to motivate me. Also, I like to meditate/think every other morning on the value of productivity, it really opens your eyes. Hell listen to Rocky soundtracks or something. You just gotta pump yourself up to start off.

If you don't really want it you aren't going to take any action towards getting it.

You seem to be happier fantasizing about achieving results, while still recieving the impulsive pleasures of eating shit, and playing video games.

Until you man up and your life becomes something of meaning to you beyond fantasy and instant gratification, you will remain a failure.

just stop being lazy. there isnt really any advice that is garanteed you just have to get mad at yourself for being a lazy ass and force yourself to do them and then once you are doing them you want to carry on because you get in the flow. If you slip back into lazyness you are just a waste of space.....its like fat people, its not hard to lose weight, hell i could do it if i wanted and im not overweight. There is nothing hard about restricting your food intake and doing a little bit more excersise like walking to somewhere consistantly instead of driving but they are just lazy.

You can achieve your goals very easily you just have to tell yoursself your being a lazy twat

Eww, fat people..

Well I have made myself a scedule, and have been doing pretty well thus far. (Thanks for the input, guys.) I've been trying to go for a run every time I get home, as opposed to actually going inside. Seems to work pretty well. I was also browsing that "Kicking Speed" topic, so I think I'll start just jumping in the pool after a run and do some kicks. Homework is still a huge issue. <_< I hate the shit, but I've got a 4-day weekend coming up, so I've got plenty of time.

Do the homework before you start doing any of your "couch-potato-activities". That way you'll get it done and then have the remainder of the evening to do what the hell you want to do. It is a good feeling.

To learn a new language efficiently you have to WANT to learn it. Don't view it as a task, view it as something to help you improve. Use any opportunity you can to speak in Portuguese native-speakers, whether it be in person or over the internet. Learn their slang. Watch videos and TV in Portuguese on youtube. Set the language of your myspace or whatever you use to Portuguese. Don't translate something into English or translate your English thoughts into Portuguese, THINK in Portuguese.

Hey man, I used to have major issues with motavation. What I found that helped a lot was reminding your self of your goals, watch videos of great trickers and shit or something else that may get your adrenaline running, then go out whip of some tricks, and once you land a new one that you really like, you will want to keep going. This works for other things besides tricking, but it can work along the same idea.

And it's actually true, having some one, preferably a girl friend, who can be along your side with everything you do, and keep you happy. You will have a lot more motavation and possibly feel that you need to impress her and then you will be more dedicated.

Music that helps your heart get beating helps a lot too

Yeah, because musicians only make music for other musicians to enjoy. Absolutely no one else can appreciate music. Otherwise they'd have these great big gatherings where people would stand around en-mass and listen to musicians perform on stage, which would be cool, because they'd all appreciate it without necessarily being musicians themselves. They would probably be called "consorts" or "Con Certs" or some crazy shit like that. Too bad that no one but musicians can love music though. It would be pretty cool if those things existed. Musicians might actually sell records too.
