Aside from rugby-specific skill training, which you'll get from your team, the best thing to do I think would be some kind of basic weight-training program with the aim of increasing your squat, dead, bench, etc. Do you have any experience here?
Any kind of cardio will help, I'd suggest more like medium-paced jogging rather than sprints because you'll be sprinting during rugby practices and matches anyway, and its far more stressful than jogging. Once you get into the swing of things the matches and practices might be plenty to maintain your cardio ability.

This is crap.

Rugby is a highly demanding cardio vascular game, interval training is PERFECT for rugby training; it gets the heart an muscles used to working constantly with occasional high intensity bursts.

Plus, you shouldn't limit your cardio purely because you'll be doing a lot of it during games, this is self-defeating in the competitive world.

Go to the woods, and try tackling as many trees you can, without breaking anything.

My stated reason for not neccessarily going for HIIT was that he'd be getting a lot of it already. Most sports teams at my uni train 3 or 4 times a week, I don't know how much Casper will be doing but if its anything like that then there's not much room for MORE cardio on top of it, least of all something that uses up a lot of recovery credits, like sprints.
If he's still pre-season then fine, he can sprint 'til he hurls, but once games start coming that might have to stop.

You're training 3-4 days a week. Even then you could fit in another day or two of private training. It won't damage you.

Naturally, turn down the amount of high intensity training you do pre-game but other than that there's little reason to not train.

I can't remember what it was like at your age but these days I'd be ruined by it.

Casper - do as much as you can so long as it is making you better. If its making you worse and you're not recovering in time then do less.

you want to train your explosive power, so olympic lifts and interval training would be good
